Engine only runs at low idle and smokes

Husquvarna rider. B/S motor 19.5HP. 146 hours. bought in 2005. Seems to have had a gradual decline over the past few months. It started out you could mow for a good hour and then it would start to bog down in very little grass at all. Turn the blades off and it runs fine.... Now, once you crank the mower after 10 seconds it goes to a very low Idle and blows white smoke the whole time. Engage the blades and it dies. This is all it is doing now. Any ideas?

Hi,
So now, without the blades engaged, it smokes and then dies?
In your first description it sounded like the engine was under a strain. Overfilling with oil could produce a strain, but since it ran ok until you said you engaged the blades, I would have to ask if the blades themselves, were causing the strain. Sometimes if you cut wet grass, the clippings stick to your underside of the deck and can really build up. Also some rope, wire or twine would around the spindles could creat one. Check this out...
Now, with the "smoke" issue (I'm assuming a blue smoke from burning oil) I'm inclined to think your rings aren't compressing any longer and you're burning oil. You might be in for a rebuild... I hope not.

MOTOR CUT OUT , OR WONT IDLE AT STOP STREETS OR ROBOTS oIL LIGHTS START FLICKERING AND ENGINE STALLS

if this is happening when the foot is on the brake, then it is possible that the brake booster is leaking air and running the engine too lean.
check by idling without the foot on the brake

How do you adjust idle on 2005 dyna fxdl low rider?

On the carb the cable closest to the right side of the bike is the throttle cable and the one closest to the left side is the idle cable. Right about the middle between the two is the idle adjustment screw. It faces out towards the air filter end of the carb . The engine should be at operating temperature with the enrichener off to set the idle between 950-1050 rpm. Turn the screw clockwise to increases idle speed and counterclockwise to decrease idle speed. EFI idle speed is computer controlled.

Husquvarna chainsaw carb adjusting

Hi Mark
Before you remove or try to adjust your low and high speed jets you should always count the number of turns it takes to lightly seat the idle mixture screw and high speed needle adjusting screws.
Be sure to write the number of turns down on a piece of paper so you will know how many turns from the seated position to open the jets when you go to reinstall them, or if you remove them for cleaning or replacement.
If you have aready tried to adjust them then the adjustments below should get it running for you for final adjustment when warm.
Normally you will adjust your idle jet to 1/2-3/4 turn open from the bottom seated position.
Then you will re-adjust the low speed of the engine when the engine is warm by turning the idle screw in or out till the engine runs smoothly at idle speed, around 1200 RPM.
The high speed jet is adjusted to 1 1/2- 1 3/4 open from the bottom seated position, after the engine is warm.
Then re-adjusted by turning the High Speed jet adjustment screw in or out till the motor runs smoothly at high speed.
Alway use the "lightly seated" method if you have not changed the screw settings.

Idle is high at start - 1800 rpm. Seems like excessive white smoke from exhaust. Put into reverse and back out of driveway it has a regular shudder (bump bump bump) but not hard metal grinding sound.....

white smoke out of the exhaust would be a sign that it is burning coolant... if it goes away after it warms up, it could just be condensation inside the exhaust pipe. 1800 rpm is a very high idle, maybe have your IAC motor on the throttle body checked... check engine light? if so have the code read at your local auto zone.

I have CraftsmanLT1000 lawn tractor, Smokes heavily.

First check the oil, not only the level but the smell
if its overfull and it smells like gasoline then the problem is that your carb is dirty or the float is sticking and flooding the engine with gas. If the oil is at the correct level then the problem is more likely the valve stem seals, as the engine warms they leak. I presume you have checked the airfilter is clean? The choke is comming off completely when you move the throttle cable? The LT 1000 is the entry level rider in the sears line. The engine usually starts wearing out in about 50 hours use. Remember the sweetness of low price is long forgotten with the bitterness of low quality!
