Sharp microwave drawer lost power and replacement of fuse didn't work. Is it worth trying to get it repaired?

We tried replacing the fuse last night. At first, there was nothing, but when my husband banged on the top, the control panel lit up. We pressed the button to start it, and the whole thing died. We repeated this a couple more times, but no luck, the microwave kept shorting out immediately. We replaced with a 15 amp fuse that matches the size of the original. Is there anything else we can try before giving up?

The most common suspect here is a shorted high voltage capacitor, since you say it blew the fuse right after Start, but I would certainly suggest checking the door switches and door switch mounts first. Just be sure you installed the right fuse. It would be a The switch mounts seem to break at about this point in the life of these models. If you or a friend decide to work on it, we have *critical* safety, disassembly, and troubleshooting info (as well as a text file which helps in diagnosing and repairing door switch problems) at our site, which is linked at our listing here on FixYa: http://tinyurl.com/yzjozk You can find helpful exploded view diagrams and order parts by entering your model number here: http://www3.sears.com (the three is correct)

SOURCE: Control Panel of Maytag Microwave CMV 1000B doesn't work

You have a failed membrane keypad.

If you (or someone you know) might want to replace it yourself, I have uploaded a handy guide with pictures showing you what's typically involved.

You can usually find helpful exploded view diagrams and order parts by entering your full model number here.

There should also be a "mini-manual" hidden inside the unit behind the control panel or hidden on the left side behind the grille, which is very helpful when troubleshooting & testing.

If you would like to have us do this repair for you, we do that for $39.95 plus part costs.

At our Web site, we have a video available showing how to remove a typical over the range control panel assembly in under 5 minutes.

Feel free to contact me directly (and please remind me of your model number) for more information & help.

We're happy to help you with free advice and we'd appreciate your thoughtful rating of our answer.

SOURCE: Microwave oven shuts off after one minute

This is a problem in one of the damper-related components, most likely the switch, but it may also be the motor or the damper door.

The damper is a door inside that opens or closes depending on cooking mode. If the controller senses that the door is not in the right position, it will shut down the cook cycle.

Sharp models stop after 59 seconds.

See the attached sample photo for a typical damper assembly.

What is your model number? We may be able to point you to the full service manual too.

If a switch is all you need, we offer a universal type for only $5 postpaid which you can order here.

The best place to order parts for this brand is Tritronics. Or you can call them toll-free at 866-779-5835. Their Web site re-opens tomorrow.

SOURCE: Maytag MMV4205BA microwave buzz/grind when operating then no power

you may have some arching inside where your magnatron is located. If you open the door on the right middle part there is a silverplate on the wall .If it is burned you may need to replace magnatron.if you do not seee burn marks it may still be the magnatron hope.that would be the only possible thing that would make the noise other then the mtor plate out of place.

SHARP Microwave Drawer KB6524PS. My microwave drawer stopped working right after I hit the Start/add minute button. The repair guy I brought out has never worked on one before and was of no help. He didn't...

I haven't even seen a microwave drawer yet - I don't think many are sold here in the UK. Sharp used to make quality equipment but the quality dropped and kept dropping until very little Sharp gear is sold here, in fact I heard they have almost withdrawn from the European market.

The microwave drawer is almost exclusive to Sharp as they were the inventors and own the patent...

Although the arrangement is different the working principle must remain the same and there are two distinctly separate parts, namely the timer and switching and the high tension side that generates the dangerously high voltage that drives the magnetron.

Testing the high tension side is beyond the scope of the home tester though some basic ohm meter checks can provide a rough idea.
An ordinary multimeter will allow the testing of the switching and supply side by checking whether mains power is being supplied to the high voltage transformer, or inverter if it is that type.

The difficult part will be dismantling the unit for good access and I suspect the second most painful problem will be obtaining replacement parts. My last experience with Sharp told me their parts are priced not to sell, forcing users to buy a new appliance rather than repair. One small circuit board would have cost me more than double the cost of a replacement appliance.

What causes microwave to blow new fuse?

The only thing inside a microwave oven that draws enough current to blow a fuse is the magnetron that generates the microwaves to provide the cooking power. Based on the age of the unit (approx 15 years) it is most likely best to just replace it as repairs at that level are not cost effective. Newer units cook better and faster using less power these days.

Sharp KB-6524PS no power

I've got the same model and the same problem. Inside the microwave the Noise Isolation transformer shows black carbon from arcing on both sides of the PCB, but only no one pin.
It looks like a short to me, but I'm not sure what to replace. It appears this might be a common problem.

On most recent Sharp microwaves, the fuse only interrupts main power, so if the fuse is blown, it will be totally dead.

The first thing I would suggest is a hard reset. Unplug the unit for a minute or so. Then plug it back in, set the clock and try again.

If that doesn't work, leave it unplugged for about 5 minutes then try it.

Then chances are you have a failed microwave display. Unless this is an over the range, touch screen, or convection type, it's probably not worth repair, but you can get more information on such repairs here.

My model nn-p295wf microwave stopped working ,all power just stopped, about a year ago. I took it to a repair shop and they replaced the DIODE and the fuse, then it worked again. Afew weeks ago it happened...

Replace the magnetron, safety fuse and diode as a set and check the door interlock switches.
That should get it working for another year or so.
Don't forget microwave mains fuses are special sand filled and semisurge type.

Microwave not working-Sharp 798 M,oven Grill ok

Sounds like the magnetron has failed. This is the component that produces the microwaves that heats the food.

The cost of the magnetron is about 95% of the cost of a microwave oven. Most people don't, for this reason, replace the magnetron, they replace the whole oven which is probably what you will end up doing.

There is a possibility that the circuit that provides power to the magnetron is faulty and you need to take it apart, find the proper electrical leads and test them with a volt meter. To do this you have to remove it from its mounting and take it apart. It is a fairly lengthy process however.

Sharp Microwave Lights Up, But Won't Rotate or Cook

Hi. I would suggest checking out the door switches. There are usually 3. If one of those has failed then the microwave won't operate because of safety reasons. Best to replace all three. If the display on the unit is still fully operational I'd say go for the repair.

Dead replaced fuse now makes loud noise

Yes that noise is causing your fuse to blow. Machine gun sound sounds like the High Voltage Capacitor or High voltage diode is bad. (Loud humming sound is usually a bad magnetron or bad power transformer). Most of these parts are inexpensive, except for the magnetron. But most of the repair bill is most likely going to be for labor.

Based on your model, it looks like an over the range microwave. And to fix any of these problems require the removal of the microwave from the wall. So its up to you if you want to deal with that hassle. But you also have to consider that you'll probably have a hard time trying to find a new microwave that will fit.

Lost power suddenly

Could be; replacement fuses avail @ RadioShack or a similar place for a few bucks, so it's worth trying. Just remove the outer casing, look for the white plastic snap-on container (might say "FUSE" on the side). See this also:
