SOURCE: I've lost my instruction manual
I've always been able to get a free PDF downloadable manual from
Janome. They are happy to send you a manual for your specific machine
via email, and they've always been very helpful to me. Here's a link
to them:

Hope this helps!

If everything appears to be working correctly for the first side and stops and bunches up when it should reverse - Make sure you have pulled down the stopper arm (this is not clear in the manual) when the button hole foot contacts the stopper arm gently push the foot against the stopper arm and the direction will reverse and finish the button hole. **Stopper arm pulls down from above - Check the pictures in you manual carefully.**
SOURCE: buttonhole jams - 'bl' what do I do?
Hi,
Have just had the same thing. Found out that the BL stands for Buttonhole Lever. On pg 22 of your manual you will see at step 3 that you need to pull down the buttonhole lever as far as you can before attempting to sew. On your machine it is a black lever tucked up under near the needle. Hope this helps. Cheers

SOURCE: Janome 2030 QDC How to
does it sew buttonholes both ways?
My Janome 6500 always buttonholes away from me, so when it starts, it sews the near bartack, then stitches backwards down the right hand side of the buttonhole. It then comes back with little straight stiches on other side and sews the zigzag backwards on the left side, then the far bar tack. I would have thought your Janome would do the same stitch sequence.
