Hello, Since the TX-SR502 does not have HDMI inputs you need to connect the HDMI from the XBox 360 to the TV. You can connect an optical cable from the XBox to the receiver if the XBox has an optical output. If not you can connect the optical out from the TV to the receiver. Connect to the optical #2 port on the receiver and press the video 2 button. You should have audio. Thank you, Onkyo USA

Testimonial: "Thank you for the info. I really do appreciate the quick and accurate remedy to my question. When I tried to make the suggested connection I found that the toslink function was not working on any of the inputs so I ended up using the RCA jacks and finally got some sound that wasn't half bad. Once again, thank you for your response. Kevin G."

Hello Fixya team, I need help!

To set up your home theater system with the equipment you mentioned, follow these steps:
  1. Connect the Onkyo receiver to the NEC TV using an HDMI cable. Make sure the HDMI input on the TV is set to the correct input for the Onkyo receiver.
  2. Connect the Panasonic DVD player to the Onkyo receiver using an HDMI cable.
  3. Connect the Firestick Lite to the Onkyo receiver using an HDMI cable.
  4. Connect the Panasonic speakers to the Onkyo receiver using speaker wires. Make sure you connect the speakers to the correct speaker terminals on the receiver, which are usually labeled with the speaker's position (e.g. front left, front right, center, surround left, surround right).
  5. Configure the Onkyo receiver to use the correct input for each device. For example, set the input to "DVD" when you want to watch a movie on the Panasonic DVD player, or set the input to "Firestick" when you want to watch content on the Firestick Lite.
  6. Configure the audio settings on the Onkyo receiver to use the correct audio format for your content. For example, if you are watching a movie with Dolby Digital surround sound, make sure the receiver is set to decode Dolby Digital audio.
  7. Adjust the volume and other audio settings on the Onkyo receiver as needed to optimize the sound quality.
Once you have completed these steps, you should be able to enjoy surround sound audio from your Panasonic speakers through the Onkyo receiver.

Can you use an Onkyo RC-771M remote control to operate Onkyo receiver TX-SR502 ?

Unfortunately, the RC-771M remote doesn't control the TX-SR502. It will only work with these Onkyo models: TX-NR1008 and TX-NR808. The RC-567M is the one for the TX-SR502; replacement remotes that are exact replacements are still available from various places including Amazon.com .

Since the TX-SR502 was released in ~2004, that replacement remote probably won't control other devices that were released in 2004 or later. Onkyo changed its IR code programming before the TX-NR1008 was released in ~2010 and the RC-771M can't communicate with the older receiver. The manuals for the receivers listed above are still available from Onkyo on the product page under the Downloads tab.

I wish that I had better news for you.

Onkyo tx-nr509 Receiver not talking to Panasonic TV TX-L42E31B

Hello, I am sorry about your issue. If the cable is long from the receiver to the TV it may cause video issues. Please try a reset of the receiver by pressing and holding vcr/dvr and then on/standby. When display shows clear let go. The receiver will shut down. Turn back on and test. This procedure will take the receiver back to factory defaults. Thank you, CB

When connecting optical inputs there is no audio output

You have to assign each digital input.

Register and download the manual for free at retrevo.com

Search the document for "assign".

Just purchased a Panasonic DMT-350 with analog 7.1 out and hooked up to my Onkyo 989 but tried everything and i mean everything to get my rear surround to play but no luck....pleeeeeease help me.

Hi.

Connect the Panasonic to one of the AV inputs on the Onkyo. Use red white and yellow AV cables. Connect the output from the Panasonic to one of the five AV video inputs on the Onkyo (or use the DVD dedicated input in the Onkyo backpanel). I indicated this option using red arrows. You can use any of the AV inputs or the DVD input at the bottom. Just ensure you do not connect to an output at the back of the Onkyo.

Alternatively use component cables and optical audio input, as indicated using the blue arrows in picture below. Select source and listen surround from the Onkyo.

There are more options. In some case you may decide to connect the DVD video output to TV and the audio to the Onkyo.

Here a manual for the TX DS989.

I have an audio problem with my TX-SR502.

If your remote also controls the Cable Box you might want to look at its audio settings. Maybe you muted it.

BTW: it would be a good idea to also run video and analog audio from the cable box directly to the TV if it has speakers so you can watch and listen independent of the Onkyo.
