Backlight bulb is burnt out. The display, on its own, will not generate enough light to read so there is a backlight bulb that brightens the display. Need to disassemble and see what type bulb is in there. Radio Shack should have a replacement if you bring your old one it.

Dim displays are normally caused by failing, bulging or split capacitors on the back of the display. They regulate voltage to the display. If you are proficient with a soldering iron, you can do it yourself.
It is normally difficult to get in, but on the back of the display there is a capacitor and it needs replacing. If you take it in to an appliance shop, they will normally say "New Display Board", but the solution was $5 component replacement not $150 board.

not sure about that one but there is a dimmer wheel by the light switch. move it up and down to dim and brighten the dask lights/cluster. wheel may need replacing. also work the lights on and off switch manually to see if there every thing works smooth or hopes from dim to brite.
The display dims except for when you are doing something with it to save power - I hope this is your situation. If it is always dim and going out this is another problem alltogether.
You have the unit in dark mode. Press the Dim/Dark button again to get the unit to full brightness. THe unit has 3 levels of DIM. First the unit is at its full brightness, pressing the dim/dark button will dim the display and the unit functions normally. Press the Dim/Dark button again will futher darken the display but when the unit alarms the display is turned off and remain off during the alert. After the alert is over the unit waits 20 seconds of no alert to turn the display back on.
The display will dim for certain features that are not available for use in your current configuration or current operation.
For example; if you do not have an antenna plugged in then the selection for the tuner will be dimmed on the display.
