I need the flat beater. mine is cracked but still holding together. they say it is pot metal so can not weld. what do I do?
SOURCE: Metal stem broke!
you should be able to order the part from kitchenaid.com. while you replace the stem it might be a good idea to replace the hub, and the gear assembly in the planitary unit

yes the cast can be welded(brazed). if you are able to weld this yourself, just remember before you can weld it, you have to heat it till it is cherry red then you can weld the piece. if your not qualified to weld it you can usually find a portable welding company to do this for you. hope this helps you please rate the solution...thanks

It sounds like the nylon gear is stripped out. It is a rather easy to replace and also inexpensive. A gentlemen posted a step by step site to replace the gear. The link is http://www.neilcrockett.com/mixer.htm
Good Luck
SOURCE: Kitchenaid hand mixer (about 18 years old) works
ROTHL, you must be joking. 18 years?!? You're lucky it still turns on. In the last 18 years (I do a lot of cooking), I've gone through 5 hand mixers.
Buy a new one.

It sounds like you have two problems. First, the black marks are usually because of a reaction between the beater and certain chemicals used in dishwashers. Try washing the beater by hand and scrubbing it throughly to remove any residue. If this works, don't use the dishwasher again. You could also buy a plastic coated beater.
It also sounds like the bowl height needs adjusting. There is a screw just under the head for this.
