When vacuuming my beater bar was working fine. I turned it off to vacuum around my cords and it wouldnt turn on again.I tried the reset button and checking the belt etc. Is there a way to tell if my reset button went bad without taking it in to a repair shop? What else could the problem be? One minute it was working the next not. We took the screws out and looked for a short but there was none.
Hey, this is Jim with Crucial Vacuum,
If your Electrolux 6500 beater bar has stopped working there are a few general maintenance tips you can perform before taking it to a repair shop.
Since you've checked your belt and discovered no problems like a lack of tension, begin by manually rotating your beater bar to see if there is any resistance. Look for any noticeable debris, or hidden clogs behind it. If the bristles are loose, or worn down it may be time to replace the beater bar outright. If there is a good amount of resistance when rotating it apply a little bit of oil on the bearings. WD40 will work fine.

Things that can stop your power head from working are: Loose wire in wands, broken wire in hose, dirty contacts where hose swivels, bad motor, bad circuit breaker, bad wire in motor unit. You have done the obvious by checking the reset button and looking for a bad wire.
I test these with a few simple tools, The power head is run on 120 volts and I rigged a simple light socket with a bulb that will plug into the connectors at the wand and hose. This answers if you are getting power to where the light is attached. You can also do this with a volt meter. If you have power at the lowest end of the wand. I then would remove the covers and check the voltage across the circuit breaker and across the motor leads. If you have 120 volts across either of these when the unit is on that is the bad part to investigate.
My current limited test panel allows me to check this in a few minutes. I can apply jumper cables across the suspect parts and usually find the problem in 5 minutes. We don't charge for doing these simple tests in our store. Please be careful working with electricity if you do not have the proper tools or training.
The problem may be either the hose or the spout[the area where connect the hose.Start the vacuum and twist the hose around especially near the end that connects to the wand.If it starts and stops it is probably the hose.....please get back to me if this doesn't help...Chris
Testimonial: "not doing a thing\"
not doing a thing. The vacuum works fine. I keep going back to what the repair man who I bought the used vacuum from. He said he replaced a fuse. I cant find him anymore to ask! I called a technician and they looked online and said that yes there was a fuse in the canister that controlled the beater bar. I would like to know where to order a fuse and how to replace it. Thanks
