Hi Robinm61,
I always have the filter in - - it helps protect the motor.
If you're going to vac liquids, I recommend use of an intermediate trap to
stop most of the liquid from getting to my vac (makes clean-up a LOT
easier). A cyclone-top (available at Rocker.com, for example) fitting on a 5-gallon pail works great. The
liquid is mostly deposited in the 5-gal pail, and doesn't gum-up the guts of your vac. You need another section of hose, but that's another one of those tools that is hard to have too-much of. (Rockler also sells a nice hose as part of it's Vacuum Tool Kit - also at Rockler.com). Photos (courtesy of Rockler.com) follow below.
If I can be of further assistance, let me know. If this helps or solves the issue, please rate it accordingly.
Thanks in-advance,
Jon

Vacuuming Liquids
1. When picking up small amounts of liquid
the filter may be left in place.
2. When picking up large amounts of liquid
we recommend that the filter be
removed. If the filter is not removed, it
will become saturated and misting
may appear in the exhaust.
3. After using the vac to pick up liquids,
the filter must be dried to reduce the
risk of possible mildew and damage to
the filter.
4. When the liquid in the drum reaches a
predetermined level, the float mechanism
will rise automatically to cut off
airflow. When this happens, turn off
the vac, unplug the power cord, and
empty the drum. You will know that the
float has risen because vac airflow
ceases and the motor noise will
become higher in pitch, due to
increased motor speed.
IMPORTANT: To reduce the risk of damage
to the vac do not run motor with float
in raised position

Hi there, it's Jack at Dyson.
The filters in our handheld machines should be washed at least once a month using cold water without detergent. However, they should always be allowed to try completely before they're replaced, which may take at least 12 hours. It can help to place the filter somewhere warm - for example, by a radiator, or in an airing cupboard.
Unfortunately, if you have used your machine with a wet filter in place, this is likely to have caused damage to the motor. Using your machine with a wet filter will also have voided the machine's 2-year guarantee.
I would encourage you to get in touch with us directly so we can confirm which replacement parts you may need to get the machine running again. You can reach our customer Helpline on 0800 298 0298 (UK), or 1-866-693-9766 (US).
Best wishes,
Jack
