Hi Megan
It could be several things.
First things first:
• have you tried adjusting the screen brightness from the keyboard? (the keys are on the very top row)
• have you tried turning your laptop completely off and restart it?
• when you restart your machine do you hear the startup sound? If not it might be the machine itself.
• Does it have power?
• if you do not hear the sound, maybe it is not booting - if you hear the sound is the screen still black? (I assume this as you have not given any information about what "work" actually means)
• If you have access to another screen to connect it will show if it really is your screen there is a problem with. I believe your machine have a port for an extra screen.
Hope the first two suggestions help.
Or you may have to consult someone for hand on help.

Hi smithmollie,
There should be a "displays" icon in the top right portion of the menu bar where you can change the display mode to "Mirror Display" whenever you connect the projector.
If it's not there go to "System Preferences" > "Displays" >
"Display" tab and put a checkmark next to "Show displays in menu bar".
Also you can go to "System Preferences" > "Displays" and leave it open while connecting the projector and change the settings to "Mirror Display" there.
Best regards,
Thomas
SOURCE: what courses the hard drive to file on a mac book pro laptop.
Hi Stephanie
This is one of those questions that's virtually impossible to answer, it could be anything.
Your best option is to take to a mac specialist (the dealer where you bought it) or to an Apple Store if you have one near by.
It may not need a new hard drive, it may just be corrupted and need sorting out. On the other hand it could have failed mechanically and will need to be replaced - check your warranty. There have been a number of reports of HDs failing in some models and Apple have replaced them free of charge as there was a manufacturing fault at the HD factory that didn't come to light until the drives had been running for about a year.
You have been using Time Machine to back up your work haven't you?

Try to reset the PRAM and SMC follow the Process in Apple webpage. If still the issue persist try removing the Ram and check with a good one if you have any.this should solve the isue.If still the issue arise then it can be a logic board problem
SOURCE: Lost install disk for Mac book pro My 13" Mac book
You will need some install disks to even begin working on your issue.
Your options:
Once you have a install CD, I would recommend backing up your system by making a disk image of the hard drive to an external drive. Then doing a clean install and then using the Migration Assistant to restore your user files to the clean install on your hard drive.
SOURCE: how do I get the DVD out of my Mac Book Pro
A few ways of doing this
1) restart mac and press down the trackpad after you hear the startup noise
2) if
that does not work try opening up disk utility and click on the icon of
your disk under the left hand column then go up to eject button and
click eject
3) or open up terminal found in the utilities folder within your applications folder and then type in drutil tray eject and then press return
4) Finally
what to do is try pick up your macbook tilt the macbook to the one side
and press the eject key and hopefully the effect of gravity will allow
the CD to fall out.
However, I would say that DVD drives in all macs are a bit suspect and if your macbook is still under warranty or under AppleCare take it back to the Apple Store and tell them that the DVD drive is faulty and they will replace it free off charge.
If it is out of warranty there is one other way to do it which I have used
recently but IT CAN BREAK THE DVD DRIVE (Use it at your own risk), so only use it as a last
resort. Get a thin piece of plastic (or credit card) and put a piece of double sided tape
on it then with the macbook switched off insert the piece of plastic
with the tape facing down in relation to the keyboard. Put it in about
half an inch and you may be able to drag the DVD out.
Hope this helps.
