What is WPS button?

The WPS is abbreviation for Wi-Fi Protected Setup. This function should you help to set up strong wireless network password (so called "shared secret") by very easy way.
For most of users is very hard to create, remember and assign complex long password to Wi-Fi router and client devices e.g. smart phones, laptops, printers.
Short and simple (non-complex) password is weak and can be broken by hackers. You can set strong password using WPS buttons. No device management access is required.

Procedure description
Press WPS button on both devices you wish connect each other. (Router, wireless printer...)Wait until password is set automatically and devices are connected. There exists second procedure in WPS standard. It is similar to described one, but PIN number is required in addition.

Security warning!!!
Enabled WPS function is very high security risk. The WPS sets strong password, but offers another security hole to hackers. The WPS standard is affected by well known vulnerability and therefore is insecure. It is recommended to DISABLE WPS ON ALL DEVICES. Go to device setup and disable the WPS completely.

Windows problems connecting to WPS enabled routers

You may come across connection problems when routers have Wi-Fi Protected Setup (WPS) enabled and clients do not support it.

In Windows XP, Wireless Zero Configuration (WZC) may mistake a WPS enabled router for a WPA-Radius protected one and warn you that there is no certificate to connect to it:

79aba31.jpg

To work around this problem, you can either disable 802.1x authentication on the client or disable WPS on the router's.

802.1x on the client can be disabled in the properties of the wireless network. On the Authentication tab, untick the 802.1x Authentication option. Make sure that the correct encryption type is selected on the Association tab and that the WPA Pre-Shared Key or the WEP key is entered.

On Windows Vista things may even be worse. When you try to connect to a WPS enabled network, Vista may prompt you for a user name, password and domain name as if PEAP authentication were used. When you manually create the network profile specifying WPA2-PSK, AES and the Pre-shared Key, Vista may refuse to connect stating that the network profile does not match the actual configuration. The only work-around in this case is to disable WPS on the router.

To disable WPS on the router, go to the Wi-Fi Protected Setup.
To learn how to disable WPS click here...
At the top of the page, just set WPS to disabled and apply changes. You may need to delete the profile for the network on the client card before it can connect to the router.

Wi-Fi Protected Setup (WPS) is a standard for easy and secure wireless network set up and connections. Some of NETGEAR's products use the name Push 'n' Connect for WPS. To use WPS, your product must support WPS and be compatible with WPA security. WPS can automatically set up a random network name (SSID) and strong WPA wireless security for wireless routers, access points, computers, adapters, Wi-Fi phones, and other electronic devices.
WPS lets you use a push button or enter a personal identification number (PIN) instead of manually entering a network name (SSID) and password:

Have a dlink print server dpr1040 and dlink wireless router how do i print wireless

DPR-1040 information - http://www.dlink.com.au/products/?pid=777

All of this is from the manual located at link above under the resources tab.

Wireless Setup

WPS (Push Button Configuration)
WPS simplifies the process of connecting to a wireless network to a touch of a button. To use WPS you must have a WPS compatible wireless router,if you do not then you will need to manually configure the wireless connection in the web configurator (see Web Configurator below).

1. After following the hardware installation steps in section 3, ensure your wireless network is operating normally. When ready, press the WPS button located on the side of the DPR-1040. The blue LED should start flashing repeatedly.

2. Within 120 seconds, press the WPS button located on the wireless router you will be connecting to. This button may also be located in the router's web configuration pages labeled "Push Button Configuration (PBC)".

3. If successful, a wireless connection will be established between the two devices.
This connection is secure and uses automatically generated encryption keys; you do not need to remember them.

Note: If you experience problems connecting to a device, please try again. If you still experience problems, the device you're connecting to may be incompatible with the DPR-1040. Also, make sure you are connecting to a router or access point (AP).

Web Configurator

1. After following the hardware installation steps in section 3, ensure your wireless network is operating normally. When ready, type the IP address of the DPR-1040 into your browser, the default IP address is 192.168.0.10. If this does not work, use the PS-Link utility to find out the IP address.

2. Upon accessing the web configurator, click Setup > Wireless Setup.

3. On the next screen, enter the wireless network settings as provided by your network administrator.

4. Click Apply Settings, the DPR-1040 will restart and the wireless setup is complete.

Note: If your wireless connection does not work, check that you have entered the correct network settings into the Wireless Setup screen.

I have two laptops and want to set up a wireless network. I have the wireless set up but it isn't secure. When I go in to the Homegroups page it asks me for a 4 or 8 digit PIN number found on the router....

If you don't know it, you won't be able to automate your Wifi Protected Setup (WPS). The pin is a very specific way to prevent yourself from always having to remember codes, keys, passphrases, etc. Without it, its like saying that you want to to connect to Bank of America, and that it's just okay because you want it to happen.

The following is taken from the ESR-9753 manual:

- Wi-Fi Protected Setup (WPS)

WPS is the simplest way to establish a connection between the wireless clients
and the wireless router. You don’t have to select the encryption mode and fill in a
long encryption passphrase every time when you try to setup a wireless
connection. You only need to press a button on both wireless client and wireless
router, and the WPS will do the rest for you.

The wireless router supports two types of WPS: WPS via Push Button and
WPS via PIN code. If you want to use the Push Button, you have to push a
specific button on the wireless client or in the utility of the wireless client to start
the WPS mode, and switch the wireless router to WPS mode. You can simply
push the WPS button of the wireless router, or click the ‘Start to Process’ button
in the web configuration interface. If you want to use the PIN code, you have to
know the PIN code of the wireless client and switch it to WPS mode, then fill-in
the PIN code of the wireless client through the web configuration interface of the
wireless router.
