Hey, you've got a very cool Maytag...they were made so well 20 years back!
A few things to check:
You can access the insides very easily: just remove the two phillips screws on the bottom of the front panel of the machine... down by the toe kick area.. then tip the bottom of the panel forward until the top clips come free of the top cover of the machine.
There are two screws that hold the front corners of the top cover down... you can remove them with a nutdriver.
Then you can tip the top up and check everything.
First thing the fill hose:
There is a fill hose at the top of the drum. It tub top cover. The hose should be hooked into the hole in the tub. If it isn't, the water will pour out the hose, over the top of the drum and alot will end up running down the outside.
Also check the drain hose that connects the tub to the pump. It may be leaking.
Also, check the gasket/clamp that holds the top of the outer tub to the main outer tub.
Lastly check the drain hose connections in the machine.
These machines pump a good amount of water out during the drain portion of the cycle.
it's also a good idea to standby and watch during a spin/drain cycle to make sure the drain standpipe in your home isn't backing up when the machine drains..
Let me know how you fair... this is a great machine and worth the fixups.

Hello. i can help you. unfortunately, your problem has numerous possible causes.
Your washer can develop several
types of leaks. You can track down a leak based on when it occurs:
During fill only
During drain and spin
only
All the
time
During fill only
If the washer leaks only during the
fill cycle, check these:
During drain and spin
only
A washer that leaks only during the
spin cycle often has a leak in the main drain hose. Inspect the entire hose and
correct any problem you find. Alternatively, the steel or plastic outer tubs can
rust, split, or be punctured. This may be most visible during large loads and
high water levels. If this happens, you may have to replace the entire outer
tub--but that may not be an economical repair to make. Consult a qualified
appliance repair technician for further details.
All the time
If the washer leaks all the time,
