New batteries It worked at one event only flashed 4 or 5 times had to wait long time for flash to get ready then. Never needed it again until now. Won't come on at all
Tried out my sb400 with my d7000, no problem, even with fairly used batteries. Try new batteries again, see how you go. If you use lithium batteries, make sure they are good ones, as lithium batteries die suddenly when used up,and can make you believe there's a problem with your flash. If this doesn't work you may have to send it to a Nikon Service Center

seems like the batteries have gone dead. Replace the batteries. Get a set of good capacity rechargeable NiMH batteries (I recommend Sanyo Eneloop). Also try cleaning the battery and flash contact points with an eraser.
SOURCE: Flash will not fire!
If the flash appears to work in every way apart from producing no actual flash, so the red ready light comes on etc then the problem is probably a broken flash tube. Around £150 for nikon to fix or £20 for the parts plus several hours work...but you need to be careful taking it apart due to the high voltages inside (WHICH CAN BE SERIOUSLY DANGEROUS)
If you want to sell this I would be interested.
Thanks

SOURCE: Nikon SB-800 flash - needs to be reset ?? or repaired ??
Try reseting the flash itself, press and hold the "Mode" and "on/off" buttons together for 2 seconds approx...this should reset the whole flash.
If that doesn't work try unlocking it by pressing the "on/off" and "Sel" buttons together, the padlock should disappear.
With respect to the corroded contacts you just need to try and clean them as best you can...but it sounds like you have really bad contact with the battery and hence a serious voltage drop, hence the dim display and lack of the red ready light.
Thanks
Mark

Hi grwcamp,
Sorry to hear about it not working at the graduation. Are in the correct position (I am sure you did but, we must start someplace). Look inside, see if there is battery acid in there.
If with new/fresh batteries it still does not work call Nikon. You have a warranty on it so it should be covered.
