Hi Andrew, if the flash-ready light doesn't come on after inserting new batteries, then you have a problem with your flash. You need to send it to a Nikon Service Centre

Tried out my sb400 with my d7000, no problem, even with fairly used batteries. Try new batteries again, see how you go. If you use lithium batteries, make sure they are good ones, as lithium batteries die suddenly when used up,and can make you believe there's a problem with your flash. If this doesn't work you may have to send it to a Nikon Service Center

When batteries leak, that fluid can runn all around the inside nad in the wires and disolve the tiny connections on the circut boards. If the contact are really clean and shiney bright, and the flash won't work still...it may be time to buy a new flash.
