The freezer, a Whirlpool EV170NYLS01, is equipped with a sensor that beeps when the temperature drops below a safe level. That sensor started beeping even though the door was properly closed. The food on the upper shelves in the door were just cold, not frozen, and there was frosting on things in the front of the main shelves and on things on other door shelves. The sides of the freezer are very warm (I don't remember them being so warm, ever) and the compressor seems to be working all the time.
I did not notice anything abnormal aside from that.
Thanks for any ideas of what might be wrong and what should be done.
Its the defrost timer problem in the unit.
the timer actually controls the heating and cooling in the unit.as the temparutre rises after some particular time the defrost timer starts working to melt the collected ice in the freezer unit.as when the colloected ice in the freezer section starts melting the cold air while melting passess from freezer to refrigerator from the dampner space between the two section.in your unit the timer is not working properly so the cool air is not passing and so the sides become warm after some time.as this is not very serious or maJOR problem ,but its advisable to get the timer assembly replaced.timer is located beside the compressor.its either white or black in colour plastic box.the cost of timer is near to $35 and its available at

Hi, this is a high temperature beep and the reason for this is that the
thermostat has become unstable. it is unable to read the temp at this
time. replacing the thermostat will fix this issue... but before that i wud check the temperature sensor... if that seems ok.... i ll go for replacing the thermostat..... if ur not experienced at doing this job... i wud recommend u to get a local repair guy to do it for u.....
good luck and stay safe.....
thank you

Oddly, the unit seems to be doing fine now, but this may be deceptive.
Aside from knowing what may cause a rise in temperature inside and a heating of the sides of the unit, I need to know also what may happen in the coming days if we are not able to fix the problem immediately. Could the unit fail (and create water damage), or is it just that the temperature will be slightly off and things are more or less safe for a while? In other words, how urgent is this problem?
Thanks.
