Hi. Before you get too far, call kitchenaid parts to find out if they still have parts for your mixer. They no longer show a parts list for the KSM90 so your mixer may end up in the trash.

Go to mendingshed.com and select the Kitchenaid products button then select Kitchenaid mixer parts. Near the top of the page locate the button for the free kitchenaid service manual. Download the manual and read about the disassembly and reassembly of your mixer.

This manual does not cover your mixer but is a usefull tool for working on any mixer. Good luck with it.

I have a Viking VSM700 mixer that worked one day and was put under the counter. Next time it was brought out, it did nothing. No smoke, no noice, nothing. Any ideas?

On mine, one of the two brushes was NOT advancing to hit the motor armature as it wore. Had no power. Had to take unit apart to get to motor. We spread the metal brush holder slightly with a screwdriver and allowed the brush to slide so it can make contact with the armature. Motor now works fine. Shame on the Viking Company for dropping the ball on this product!!!

Won't turn on

Check for broken wire under back cover, check carbon brushed under black screw covers on sides. The brushes are keyed and only work one way.

Mixer speed surge?

Remove the power and undo the brush caps on the side of the motor and check the brushes. They only go in one way, one corner is chamfered off and must be lined up with the little blocking lug inside the bottom of the brush holder. You may need a torch to look in there. I'm not so sure that this will be the solution but well worth a look.

Mixer won't turn on

Just recheck that you really have put the brushes back in the right way, use a torch and look in the hole. The brushes can each go in 4 ways, only one of which will work. Look for the blocker and line it up with the cut off corner on the brush. It's normally at the back, one side at the top the other at the bottom. After that you need to be looking at everything you have done for a booboo. I doubt it will be water ingress. Make sure the switch contacts come together when the lever moves to position 1.

Ksm90. Mixer will not run. Tested for power at contacted had power.can I bypass phase board for full motor run. How many ohms should I be getting on field. Ps brushes looked good and long.

be sure motor brushes are inserted in the holders correctly; as 1 side of carbon brush has a shaved corner; and must be inserted as such. you will need a flashlight to shine into holder to see the shape of holder. i've seen this many times.

Problem for KitchenAid 300 Watts KSM90 Ultra Power Series Stand Mixer Motor will not operate

This is common problem among kitchenaid mixers. If you are hearing no motor sound what so ever, The likely cause is the carbon brushes are worn or gone completely, and will need to replaced, they are located at the left and right sides of the unit and only fit ONE way. part number for both brushes is W10260958 and comes one in a package. These are a wearable part and when gone will not create an electrical field for the motor to run. If however these are visually OK, the next probable cause of this will be the motor control board, this can cause a great deal of electrical burning smell when it goes. part number for the board is W10119326. The board can be replaced but does require some know how of the unit.Hope this helps

I took out the side bolts and removed the top, now have no power to unit. did I put it back wrong? Problem I needed to address was the paddle was too low and scraping the inside of bowl. Help with both...

sm_schedule, the side bolts you removed were, in fact, the brush holder caps, and if you remove the brushes, you cut off the power to the electric motor (armature). I suspect that one or both of the brushes is (are) not seated properly. Did you remove the brushes to replace them or were you just inspecting them? I'd suggest removing them again and make sure the concave contact face of the brushes are resting completely on the armature. If you've turned a brush 90 degrees too much, it wont' seat properly. As far as adjusting the mixer head so that it doesn?t droop, this should be pretty easy to fix if you?ve got a small blade screw driver and a small hex driver (or jewelers screw driver). First, do you still have the KSM90 Parts List? If not, you can download a PDF version from the KA website. Click on Customer Care>Locate Manuals & Guides> Enter the 6 character model number (in your case, use KSM90P) and select one of the files that appear under Parts List. Turn to page 4 - Case, Gearing and Planetary unit, which shows the exploded view diagram and locate Illus. Nos. 29 & 30. Page 5 lists the parts as Adjusting Screw and Set Screw respectively. What?s probably happened is that over 12 years of operation, the vibrations from your mixer has caused the set screw to loosen and drop, hence the lower mixer head. Both screws will need to be ?adjusted? to move the head back to its original position. Now the problem is removing the head from its pedestal. Turn to page 8 and gently remove Illus. No. 7, Hinge Pin, with a hammer and pin driver. With the hinge pin removed the mixer head and pedestal can be separated and you should have access to adjusting and set screws. I would inspect them for wear and tear, and replace them, if you deem appropriate. It may take a few trial reassemblies to get the mixer head back to the original factory position, but once there, everything should be OK. I hope this helps! Howard, Burke, VA

KITCHEN AID MIXER WILL NOT WORK

If you have had the brushes out (under the big screws on each side) verify the cut corner of the brushes are oriented properly. Look inside the hole with a flash light and you will see where the cut corner needs to be.

Kitchenaid ultrapower ksm90

Yes, First unplug the unit.On either sides of the mixer there are two black motor brush retainer screws. Carefully remove them paying attention to the motor brush keyed position. You will see that one side is keyed.Check to see if the brush is competely worn down,or possibly cracked ( replace ).Always reinstall brushes the same way they came out. This should solve the problem.

Recalibrating of brushes

You don't need to guess- get a flashlight and look in the hole.  You'll see a small piece of metal in each- on one side it's upper left, the other lower right.  Put in the brush so that the notch is on the same side at the piece.  If this does not work, swap sides.  This worked first time for me.
