Buttons do not function on my d80

I am confused. All I can suggest is trying a DIFFERENT SD card.

The Nikon D-90 users manual says on page 256 that the ERR message indicates a camera malfunction and that it can be cleared by releasing the shutter.

I've found on my D-90 that the only way I can get the shutter to release is my turning the camera off. When I turn it back on the ERR message is gone and the camera functions as it should.

Occasionally, I have had to remove and reinstall the battery to make the camera turn off but this happens only rarely.

The users manual says if the condition occurs frequently or persists that you should contact a Nikon authorized repair center. I suggest that you contact Nikon tech support at www.nikon.com to see what they suggest. I think this information would apply to the D-80 as well.


The r05 is not an error message. It is an indication that the camera is shooting in burst mode (multiple shots with one button push) and that you can shoot five more shots before the camera must pause, clean its cache and be prepared to shoot again.

If you're using a wired remote, you don't have to do anything. Just use the button on the remote instead of the shutter release button on the camera.

If you're using an infrared remote, set the camera's shooting mode to one of the remote modes. The quick-response mode fires the shutter when you press the button on the remote. The delayed moded gives you two seconds to hide the remote behind your back before firing the shutter.

The Shooting Information screen was introduced with the D40. The older D80 does not have it. Instead it shows almost all of the information in the control panel and/or viewfinder, though you have to delve into the menus for some of it.

Most of the settings you could change via the Shooting Info screen on the D40, you can change by pressing the appropriate button and turning one of the command dials.

The D40 was intended as an introductory dSLR, doing more handholding for new photographers, putting things into visual, menu-driven screens. The D80 was intended as a midlevel camera, allowing faster operation using more buttons. It does less handholding, but once you learn where the controls are, it actually is faster to use. (Okay, that was based on my personal experience, since I've used both.)

Hi tmclaughlin0, In the camera is in AF-S mode, the camera will not shoot until it acquires focus. Look on page 29 of the D80 manual.

I belive this isn't a fault but more to do with how you are using the camera. The r09 message is to do with the camera buffer and how many more pictures it can hold. You do have a memory card installed, right? The r09 is normally not an error, but simply an indicator of how many more pictures you can take in the current burst before the buffer fills. The number will vary according to the image quality and size settings.

What exposure mode(s)? What focus mode(s)? Can you (not your wife) take pictures?

You did what I would suggest to do the resets. I realize this is an old question, 1 year ago, but, if you have not found a solution my suggestion is to contact Nikon. The D80 is a fine camera.

During shooting, or when the shutter-release button is pressed halfway, the number of images that can be stored in the memory buffer at current settings is shown on the exposure-count displays in the control panel and viewfinder. "r06" indicates that six images can fit in the camera's buffer, "r08" would indicate eight frames. Any other number could be displayed as well. Burst mode is used when you want to hold down the shutter button and continuously shoot. You are probably shooting in burst mode and your buffer is full, set the camera to single shot and see if that helps.

Hi taylorrm, I don't know if you have a solution to this but sometimes the AE-L/AF-L but gets pushed which is the auto focus lock button then the shutter release button cannot be used to focus and yu have to reset by pressing it again.  Even though it's confusing at first it's a feature along with the AE/AF Lock to try out to lock your focal area on a subject prior to shooting.
To sbhoward5, check to make sure the switch on the camera body is switched to AF instead of M mode(looking at the front it's on the lower right hand side below the lens release button), which sometimes happens when changing the lens - so then the mode selected is in P,S,A, or M modes on the mode dial. happy shooting,
