Generac GP5000 will turn over but will not start, If I spray start spray it turns over for a few seconds and stops. someone told me to use sea foam because it had been un-used for about 6 monhs. Ccould really use some help on this one.

You have spark so a quick test using starter fluid.

Remove air filter.
Spray a short bust (~1 second) of starter fluid directly into throat of carburetor.
Promptly crank engine.


If engine is not flooded and spark, timing, and compression are satisfactory, the engine will run for a couple seconds until starter fluid is exhausted.


If it fires with starter fluid it indicates no fuel is being delivered from carburetor.


If it doesnt fire, then insufficient spark, engine is flooded, insufficient compression, or timing.

clean carb jets out with a wire and gumout spray maybe a needle to clean small generators jets

You might have 2 problems. First is the cold start should have a choke plate that closes so the engine will run a little rich until warmed up, then the choke should be fully open. Second is the run on, that is usually caused by carbon build up in the cylinders. The carbon gets hot and ignites the fuel air mixture without the spark plug sparking. The carbon build up might be cleaned up by using sea foam. Spray into the carb while running and warmed up. Spray it until the engine sputters and stops. Let it sit for 5 to 10 minutes and then start the car. When the sea foam is an oil that gets under the carbon and while running at operating temperature it burns off taking some of the carbon with it.

Does it stall when open the choke? If yes, thoroughly clean the carb.

How much gas is in the tank? Is the gas old? If you only have a few gallons in the tank i would advise you to put 5 gals of fresh gas and a bottle of sea foam gas addititve.. if you gas is old it starts to turn to varnish and gets sticky, it smells really bad too.Go to auto zone or wal mart to get the sea foam and add it to a five gallon gas can then add your fresh gas into you car tank..You can also get the sea foam in a spraycan form that you can spray directly into your air intake..Can you hear if the fuel pump is running? Take your gas cap off and put your ear up to the filler tube to see if you can hear you fuel pump working, it sounds like a high pitch whinning sound..Have someone turn the key on while you listen for it..

the governor or or the idle coil assy needs to be replaced. Possible that a adjustment could be made.

check the oil level most products like this have a safety valve.

fuel problem, the float in the carborator is stuck, if you tap on the carborator bowl it will probably get freed up.if not take the bowl off and spray the insides with carb. cleaner.

look where you plug items in for power there should be a little circuit breaker there (a little black button) puss it in you should be ready to go.
