It sounds like the Numlk (number lock) is turned on. You will need to find the button on your laptop called ScrLk or NumLk. Press shift and this key to turn off number lock, or it is ctrl and the ScrLk button.

On my Toshiba Tecra laptop, I can toggle the Numlock feature by pressing Fn and F11. Try this and see if it works for you

For laptops that do not have a numbers pad you can fix this easily by following these microsoft instructions. You can pull up an on-screen num-lock key on-screen that is not on your laptop KB....click it nd fix it

Try turning off the Num Lock on your keyboard if it is on. To do this, Press & Hold down the Fn key and find the button that has the NmLk in blue and press it.
