Drain as much as possible diesel out of the tank and fill up the tank with unleaded petrol. Initially the engine will be difficult to start and maybe run a bit rough but will improve quickly. Diesel will not damage the engine but will have a affect on the first start and running of the engine until all the diesel is washed out of the engine.
Drain the fuel out and flush the fuel lines and the filter. Failure to purge the unleaded fuel from the system can destroy the engine due to severe pre ignition.
Just drain . After drain use 1 gallon diesel to rinse and drain again. You should be okay.
But if you run the car for couple minutes then it's better to flush the whole system.
You need to bleed your fuel line. Diesel leaves a thin coat of oil and this needs to be removed via bleeding the line in order to get a high enough octane level that will be combustible and burn off any other residue that could be left with inside the cylinder itself.
Pull your plugs and soak them in 70% or higher isopropyl rubbing alcohol to remove the oil that has covered the plugs themselves.
Also, make sure to put in some jet cleaner to clean your fuel jets so they will push enough gasoline for the engine to run properly.
fill it right up with diesel and run as normal, you will suffer a hot start problem until all the gas is used up or refill when down to 1/2 tank.(the US army use petrol/gas in diesel for tanks in arctic conditions,(forget all the bullsh..about draining the system....if the army can use it so HAVE i when ive put gas in a diesel car(about 50 times, really)check out the canadian army tanks,if you don't believe me.also the UK army, and the chieftan is 60 MILLION QUID.
as long as you didnt put in more than 30% of the tank capacity, just fill to the top with diesel.then fill again when 1/2 empty.
you will have a hot start problem so try to let the engine cool before restarting and do not use it for stop/start trips until empty.also DO NOT use full throttle or climb steep hills in too high a gear.
just to clarify.....the us/canadian army use gas in the diesel tanks in arctic conditions to stop the fuel from freezing......there engines cost 1/2 $million ......
do not worry about draining it, pour about 6 to 8 ounces of engine oil in it, and top it up with fresh fuel, it will be fine. The only way to drain the tank is to remove it and turn it over.
Diesel will not seriously harm a gasoline engine. That said, a gasoline engine will not run on diesel, it does not have the capacity to ignite the fuel. So while no actual damage has been caused, as has been stated, you will have to clean out all of the diesel before it will run again. The mechanics tell you they have to replace all of those parts, while really it is a matter of getting as much diesel out as you can, and letting the rest burn off with the gas. A bit of diesel mixed with gasoline would have the effect of a bit of oil mixed with the gas, a little smoke. Good luck and run the engine on the highest octane with fuel injector cleaner.
