Picture suddenly changed to white on bottom and black on top with gradiations of gray in between. After a second it turned black & the standby light began blinking: 4 times-pause-4 times, etc. Unplugged set & plugged in again and turned on again-seemed like it was turning on but then power light went out again.
Since the TV is still receiving power, the problem is going to be with the TV's mainboard. After you unplugged the TV and plugged it back in, you said the power light went out again, so I assume the standby light wasn't flashing again? The flashing standby light is indicating an error code so my suggestion is to contact Sony for service options regardless if there is a warranty or not because service is the only solution to this situation. Don't forget to provide them the error code or 4 flashes repeating.
I have a Sony Bravia 46" (KDL-46V2500). I've had the TV less than 2 years, and I've had the same problem. Immediately after powering on the TV, the yellow/green power light goes out and the red standby light blinks 4 times, then pauses, then repeats. I submitted a support case with Sony, and I received a very generic, canned response, whereby they asked me to contact an Authorized Sony Service Location. After doing some research on the Authorized Sony locations, it seems as though the cost of the service could be offset by buying a new LCD (different brand of course).
I remember from working on some Dell's a few years ago, that there was a problem with capacitors on the motherboards, whereby the caps would bulge and eventually seep. So as a Hail Mary pass, I removed the outer shell from the rear of the TV searching for a board with similar caps, but to no avail. I went ahead and replaced board 1-871-504-12 because it was cheap enough for a one time effort ($135.00). After re-assembly, still the same problem. I don't have the cash to exchange every single board until i get the right one.
In short, thanks Sony. I will be sure to share my story with as many people as I can.
I determined that it must be the motherboard, and would have replaced it myself, but Sony did not sell it separately. The sold only an assembly which included it. It cost hundreds of dollars. I paid a repairman to fix it

No picture or sound standby light flashing
I have a kdl 40v2500 sony that two years ago I moved from the first floor living room to a second floor bedroom. Middle of summer it shut off and I got the 4 led blink. It never blinked downstairs. What is the difference? Upstairs is not air conditioned and is a little humid.I put in a room A/C, got the temp and humidity down, unplugged the set, waited and re-pluged.In two years of constant service, the TV has not blinked [email protected]
