I own a small magic chef frig. is not old it was givin to me and it was not runing so i checked for voltage and there was voltage to the to he start relay so changed it now the comp. runs but it wont cool, my question is even if the comp. is running can the defroster be stuck. and thats why it wont cool? because there is no sign of refrigerant leak. thank you.
If the compressor is running your ref. should be getting cold.their is a defrost timer but when it is in defrost the compressor shuts off.I think you do have a leak.

You need to make sure the condenser pump and coils are vacuumed twice a year. Heavy dust will overheat the coils causing the freon to be more of a gas then a liquid, thus less coiling.
From my earlier post, our compact Magic Chef 'frig was not running at all. It still looks perfect, so decided to check on the repair. It turned out to be the "starter switch," I think is what the switch was called. The repairman said this is a very common problem, so he had the switch we needed in his truck. It was repaired quickly and is running great.
Cost was about $140, part plus labor. A replacement would have been only a few dollars more, but would take more time and effort. FYI, the compressor on these Magic Chef refrigerators has a 5-yr warranty.
Hope that helps someone.

I have the same problem with my new magic cheff over the stove microwave oven. I call magic chef and they gave me the 800 number for the service center (1-800-775-0202). When I described the problem they told me to just put a plate under the popper and this wouldn't happen anymore. I haven't tried it yet but here's hoping.
Sounds like a defrost problem. Check to see if
there is any frost buildup in the back wall of the freezer. If so, it is not
defrosting as it should.
possible causes:
bad defrost timer
bad defrost heater (in freezer)
bad thermo switch in freezer
If you don’t know what these are then unplug the machine and let the ice
melt in the freezer overnight with the door open. Then try it the next day, if
is cooling fine then you need to have a service person replace one of the above
items.
