1 inch ink smudge down right side of paper

please check the cartridge and see if it is the recommended one the printer..
if it is .... remove it ,clean the print mouth, re fix it and try printing...
sometimes refilled cartridges also give the same problem. please check that too.

Smudge mark 2-in wide down right side of each sheet of paper.

Generally speaking, any area that is darkened, is receiving less light. This can come from a lamp that is failing (similar to a fluorescent lamp used for lighting developing a dark end) or a mirror or optical lense that is contaminated with toner.
This may require some disassembly to diagnose and cure.
You may also want to visually check the fuser assembly (often accessible behind a door) to ensure there is no toner buildup on the affected side.

Smudged Printing

change ink cartdidge then try. check also paper jam.
if still problem then change ink cartridge then check.

Print is Smudged

you may try
1) clean the cartridge nozzles with dry soft paper
2) clean the cartridge carriage down side surface there might be bled ink.
3) check the cartridge up side there is the lable cover the ink refill hole is ok, no any lable stick there you need put stick lable there.

If a different cartridge doesn't solve the problem, then it's the fuser, and it's cheaper to replace this printer than have the fuser replaced.

Try going on ur computer that the printer is contected to and have the printer align itself

@ Q- 1/4 inch smudge along left side of paper, 1 inch ink smudge along right side of paper. Runs entire length of paper.
My model: HP Laser jet 1020
Necessity is indeed 'Mother of Invention' The smudging started at 12.05am today. I removed the cartridge shook it, and placed it back and re-started the printer
EUREKA! It worked ! no smudge !
