My lawn tractor makes a knocking noise when starting

Knocks when I start and kill the engine. Burns oil on startup. Runs good otherwise. The problem started after I hit a root last year. Also, it takes more cranking before it starts.

It sounds like a valve rod, or you can have damaged a con rod.

SOURCE: kolher magnum 25--worked great last year, now

a stuck float in the carb can cause this as well as old gas do to schlack build up from gas evaperating the carb should be removed and cleaned with carb cleaner and old gaskets replaced a carb kit will run about $20.00 and avail from small engine shops.
the engine number will be needed for the right kit at the bottom of the engine where it mounts there is a flat boss with a number stamped that will be needed for parts.
when the engine is stored the best thing it to run the engine and shut off the gas and run till it stops this will get ride of the gas in the carb there will still be a small amount left in it but follow recommended long term storage prep from the manufacture. hope this helps

Hi,
You did not say what fuel you running the motor on??? It sounds like it may be LPG or Propane.... is so then it seems as though you do not have enough surface for evaporation...

SOURCE: White smoke pours out of exhaust on my SV730 Kohler engine when I start it. Then it stops and the engine runs good. I think it is a bad valve guide or a valve isn't seated right and oil is running

If you filled it up with oil yourself, then you might have put in too much, Ive done that a few times myself,, try ansd drain a little, about two to three ounces, then try to start it, make sure to do this when its cold.

Damage has been done to the engine, the noise you hear are the piston rod bearing ( knocking lower part of engine ) you can try putting in a crank kit and have the piston rods mechin but will not last very long, will start to knock again, best bet to replace engine, good luck.

Recentley when I start my 2004 chevy silverado truck, it knocks and blows smoke for a few moments, then it runs fine. I have had the vehicle for 6 months.

It sounds like you have a seal problem and that is when you stop over night and the oil up top runs down past the valve seals and when you start it has adrop of oil going onto the piston,s and it burns that oil and also makes the compression a lot higher than it should be ,,causing the knocking and as soon as the oil burns up the noise stops.

Engine knocks when startup but disappears after engine warms up.....could the oil pump be defective.......what about the knock sensor....

Its probably lifter noise, check what grade of oil is in the car or change it to a slightly thicker grade,i would expect that the car has a lot of mileage on it,if the oil light goes out quickly on the dash when starting its not the oil pump(very uncommon),knock sensor is for ignition timing to stop pinging, nothing to do with your noise, generally its engine wear

Engine knocks at startup

It could be the oil pump, its not a bad idea to check the type of engine oil you are using maybe you can go a little higher in grade,
you can also try to use STP Engine oil treatment for petrol (gas) as addative to the engine oil it may help.
Hope this helps!

2000 saturn upper engine knocking

noise is caused by lack of oil to lifters, or worn timeing chain. if noise is from lifters it should go away wit proper oil level, if still there needs timeing chain.
