Belt slipping, smoking - Washing Machines

Don't know what machine you have if it has a belt check it. Take belt off & see the motor turns freely also with the belt off see if you can turn the drum if one of them won't turn the belt will slip & cause burning smell. Small clothes getting under the agitator even sometimes in the pump can cause this , check under agitator & check the pump it may not turn if a sock or something gets in it & this can cause the belt to slip. If these seem ok put it in spin & watch the motor it could have a short & will smoke. Good luck

Hi,for the belt to be squeaking and smoking the belt must be slipping,check all pullys spine freely if ok then check tension and if still smoking and sqeaking relace belt.

It is possible the belt is slipping causing tbe smoke. Alternator is not charging. It may be locked from bearing going bad so it doesnt turn. Hope this helps.

check the shaft the belt is driven with for black residue from the belt===residue will cause the belt to slip and also can cause from friction smoke there===clean completely with alcohol or very, very fine steel wool.

I would check the pulleys for the drive belt and the deck belt. Sounds like friction smoke from your belt slipping on a pulley that is not turning.

smoking is from the belt slipping. the belt needs replaced but you must check thateverything that belt runs is moving freely. you also may have just overloaded the machine. too many jeans or big blankets

I would take off the belt and check each pulley for free movement when the car is off. For example, if there is an air pump, it should turn freely. Or, if the alternator pulley is disconnected from the belt, it should turn relatively freely.

Once a belt has slipped to the point of "smoking" it is time to replace it. It will have a worn spot on it that will cause a vibration throughout your entire tractor when you are driving in addition to being weak at the burned point

Belt is slipping because the bearings on the beater brushes, which it turns, are jammed or full of dust.
Alternatively the belt has stretched after being overheated and needs replacing because it now slips.

the clattering sound was probably a stone or something that was being bounced around by the rotating bush. It jammed which caused the belt to slip and cause the smoke you saw. You can probably get away with finding and clearing the jam but I would inspect the belt just to make sure.
