You can try updating your driver or rolling it back to the last driver.

Open your device manager and navigate to your networking devices and highlight the device hardware.

Right click on the highlighted selection and select "properties" from the menu.

On the properties page, select "update driver."

The prompt will ask you if you would like to search for the device driver automatically, or select it from a list from an existing directory on your computer, or search on-line.

Select to search for the driver automatically. If none are found, then try the procedure again but select the driver from a list. If no additional drivers are available, then go back to the properties page and select "roll back driver."

If you ethernet port is broken or just not working and you are having no luck changing the settings then an easy fix is to get an adapter card. Some even have a couple USB ports on them also besides the Lan port so it is actually an upgrade.

I have Compaq nx6115 too and faced the same problem. I tried all sorts of stuff following useless guides. This works on for me:

Download drivers from Broadcom (link below) and manually install it from your Windows XP Device Manager.

Select your Windows version correctly (e.g. Windows XP 32bit)

right click on the yello sign and right click, select update driver. if it does not solves your problem then go to the website of your laptop manufacturer and download the drivers for your model

In Most cases the issue will resolved once if DRIVER of SOUND is uninstalled from Device manager and then by reinstallation...
