It wouldn't hurt anything to try to use the original power cord. Its possible that the other cord just wasnt making a good contact.

First, give me more details. Did you switch only the cable?

It runs on 5-12 VDC center of jack is + outside --

To fix the projection display that is stuck with four 8's, hold down the hour and miute button at the same time. Keep the buttons pressed down while unplugging the power source then pluging it back it. I did this and the screen works like it did when I first got it.
