Onkyo tx-nr509 no sound

Hi. Onkyo tx-nr509 stopped producing any sound also the front lcd panel doesn't show any speakers. It's almost like the left hand side of the lcd is dead but still shows "dts" logo. One day the receiver worked absolutely fine and the next day I switch it on and it's dead silent. All other functions still work as far as I know. Please help as this is my favorite receiver so far and it was the sound that I liked most. Thanks

We currently have a Special Service program to assist our customers reporting this issue. Please go into our Onkyo USA website: www.onkyousa.com. Click on the SUPPORT tab and the webpage should now show some post-its. Look for the post-it on the far lower right hand side labeled Special Service Program and click onto it to review the information.

This is a TERRIBLE program offered by Onkyo. They want to sell you a new receiver at more than normal price. They will tell you that it's a 40% discount from their list price, but any online or physical retailer sells it for less.
I cant understand what Onkyo thinks this will do for customer loyalty.
Terrible program, and not worth the time to visit their support site.
Time to switch to another brand.

I double checked all the connections before posting my problem. Today I disconected receiver from all of the cables - all hdmi's, speaker cables, sub coax and power and connected again. I also did the factory reset and none of these actions changed anything.

checked all of the speakers and they were fine. Thanks for the effort but I think this might be something more serious however if you have any more suggestions please post it here.

I have seen the same question about the same reciver on here. if it doesnt make a click sound when you turn it on then the amp is cooked or the relay isnt working. if there is no click then you need to take it to a shop or get a new one

  • Anonymous Mar 15, 2013

it clicks every time I switch it on nothing changed in that mater

  • Anonymous Mar 28, 2013

I have seen this on youtube and tried at home. I need to heat up the amp and then it works. The guy on youtube used halogen lamps and I just used a hair dryer and blown hot air through the top vents for about 2-3 minutes. It's just a bit annoying as I have to do it every time to have tv with sound.

SOURCE: My Onkyo tx sr502 quit producing sound?

I have the same problem. It's definitely the pre-amplifier board (board with speaker terminals).I did not quite nail the exact component yet but I replaced with a working one and got back sound output.

SOURCE: TX-SV525 Onkyo Receiver

NOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!! If you have the room for them to run free and loud, keep the 901's in service. Get them a good amplifier because any multichannel receiver can't deal with their special EQ needs and still drive conventional speakers for the other channels properly.

The good news. I have a setup similar to what I think you're trying to do and it works great! Get a receiver that has has 5.1 analog Outputs so you could drive up to 6 external amplifiers if you want to (I drive 4). Then you can draw off the Front L&R to a separate amp for the 901's and the 'other' (lesser) speakers can live on the receiver's native amplifiers.

A separate multi-channel amp for the 901's was my solution. Because I can run each channel independently to an external amp, I run a Carver AV-406 (5-channel amp) for my 901's in Front, 2 Subwoofers (DBX DB-SW 15's) and the Rear Surround channel (Bose 301), with the Active EQ between the receiver Front L&R Outputs and the 901's amp channels. My receiver controls everything and just drives the Center (Kenwood 777's) and Surround speakers (Bose 301's) from its own amps.

You could get by with just a stereo amp for the 901's. A Carver M-200 is a good efficient amplifier that would have you cooking just fine (2x100W). Run it with the Active EQ between the receiver Front L&R Pre-Outputs ** and the 901's amp channels.

** Multi-CH Receiver L&R Audio Out ***) >>> Bose EQ Amplifer IN, then
Bose EQ Amplier OUT >>> new amplifier IN.

Attach the 901's to the new amp, set its volume to Max and run through your receiver's speaker level setup.

Any modern AV Receiver with the pre-requisite analog outputs should work. Since you have to buy a power amp for your 901 front channels anyway the receiver need not be a powerhouse. Look for features and lots of connections for digital and analog devices. I lean toward coaxial digital connectors because A) they take standard >> and cheap << audio cables; and B) they can be shared with Y-connectors if you're careful to have only one digital device turned on at a time. Optical SP/DIF is an expensive farce to get into your wallet.

For DVD/Cable Box/Blu-Ray look for multiple HDMI or component connections. Again, length and cable cost made me look at the component connections vs HDMI and I was pleased that I can't see the difference even with HD programming from my cable box. It's all great.

I have an Onkyo AV receiver model TX-NR509 and the internet radio stopped working. I have a good internet connection. How do I fix this?

I see on Onkyo's website that the iMerge service was discontinued in late 2008, Stating that:
"the selection of Internet Radio stations available through Net-Tune will decrease and eventually will cease."
You may want get on the Onkyo website and see what services are available for that receiver.

Onkyo tx-nr509 Receiver not talking to Panasonic TV TX-L42E31B

Hello, I am sorry about your issue. If the cable is long from the receiver to the TV it may cause video issues. Please try a reset of the receiver by pressing and holding vcr/dvr and then on/standby. When display shows clear let go. The receiver will shut down. Turn back on and test. This procedure will take the receiver back to factory defaults. Thank you, CB

The remote is an RC-4278. You WILL need it.

As far as the left speaker goes, swap it to decide if it's the speaker, wire or the amp channel. There are no control settings that would make one of the front pair go silent.

I have an Onkyo tx ds777 model and I can only get sound to come out of the front speakers on direct mode. Stereo or any type of surround sound produces no sound at all. I have tried with my mp3 player...

You don't say if all speakers work with the setup procedure. THAT is step 1. Then try FM as it doesn't require any cabling. Then move on to more complex sources like external analog, then digital (and make sure to assign the ports).

7.1 would have Surround Back L and R.

6.1 would have just one back there (SB). It defaults to the Left output on the Pre-Outs if you ever go that route.

This being a 6.1 receiver it does not support two SB channels BUT you can configure those amp channels for a separate Zone supporting 2 speakers. Confused?

The manual shows a single SB speaker connected to the left side on Page 27. THAT would be consistent with a 6.1 configuration.

Press the preset/adjustment<> to change the current setting to five speakers. the listening mode will automatically change according to the number of channels you selected. Hope this helps. Radiotech
