HP is notorious for this problem. The problem is that the power jack that is connected to the motherboard has come loose. This is an easy fix is you are comfortable taking apart your notebook and are able to solder the jack back to the motherboard. I have 2 HPs and my friend has 2 and we have done this with ours as well as others. This is the link to the HP website that has your manual for disassembly .http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/DocumentIndex.jsp?contentType=SupportManual&lang=en&cc=us&docIndexId=64179&taskId=101&prodTypeId=321957&prodSeriesId=1839143 When you get to the page, download the Maintenance and Service Guide. (It is all the way at the bottom!) You will need Adobe Acroabt to read it. PRINT the instructions. They will do you no good if they are on the laptop that you are trying to disassemble!

While it may seem daunting, it is really not hard to do. Just be careful to follow all of the disassembly and reassembly instructions and you will have no problems. I promise!

Computer wont start up. Blinking green light in the back of tower

I've had that happen twice to my Vaio desktop and there was a very easy fix. I'm not a techie, but I found a recommended solution online when this first happened six months ago. I couldn't find the solution again, but I fortunately remembered the steps.

Remove the side pane to access your motherboard cables, etc. Locate the connector on your motherboard that contains the wires going from your power supply to your motherboard. It will be a large, rectangular connector with a lot of individual wires It is not a ribbon cable but should be located next to a ribbon cable connector andnext to a geen blnking light on your motherboard (when the power supply is plugged into the wall). Note: This green blinking light is in addition to the green blinking light on the back of the PC.

This next step is important: You have to disconnect the connector noted above from the motherboard WHILE the power suply is plugged into the wall. Wait a few seconds and plug it back in. The blinking reen light on the motherboard should now be a solid green light. The PC should now power up.

It worked twice for me; I hope it works for you.

Not the power supply!

Hi

To help troubleshoot a problem, Dell Dimension 5100 has four diagnostic lights labeled "1," "2," "3," "4" on the front panel. When the computer starts normally, the lights flash. After the computer starts, all four lights lites solid green. The power button also lites solid green. If the computer malfunctions, the color and sequence of the diagnostic lights as well as the power button helps identifies the problem.

First, disconnect the power cord and remove all connections (Keyboard, Network, Mouse etc) as well as optional PCI Cards. Connect up the power cord (Monitor as well) and try powering the PC.
Check the diagnostic lights/system lights color and sequence and check the link below for more info (Assuming you have another system that can access internet)

System Lights - http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/systems/dim5100/en/sm/tshoot1.htm#wp1114432

Reply with lights color and sequence as well as any beep codes and I will respond at best effort.
