Computer shut down

If there is no power going to the laptop then disconnect battery and hold the reset button in for 30 seconds, then try it again. Sometimes the memory can be damaged which can cause the laptop not to boot..?

1) The AC adapter should ALWAYS be plugged into the laptop FIRST, then plugged into AC power. If not, this could create a voltage spike.

2) Let's look at the DC Power Jack, for the Compaq Presario M2000 series of Notebook PC's,

The DC Power Jack is mounted to a removable circuit board.
Enlarging the view of the jack, shows us there is an Inductor.

The small 'can' standing up on the power board. This chipset could have gone south. (Bad)

How to know? Replace it, or dig out your dual trace oscilloscope. See if the Inductor works.

Could also just be cracked solder joints, of the DC Power Jack, TO that small circuit board. Solution would be to resolder it/them.

DC Power Jack is in good shape, soldered tight to the motherboard, and ruled out as the problem?
(Since you know the AC adapter is good)

Then the problem would be the Inductor on that power board, or power correcting chipset.

What one is it? Dunno.
DO KNOW is has J leads on the bottom.
CAN give examples, and perhaps you can identify using them.

Have you tried removing the battery, and disconnecting the power adapter. If you have not tried that please try that.
1. Once you have removed both. 2. Power up computer with just power adapter connected and no battery. 3. If the computer powers up shut computer back down 4. Put battery back in and leave power connected
If that does not fix the issue. The back light has possibly gone out on the computer. Depending on how old the computer is. 1. Either contact the manufacturer of the computer 2. Take computer to a repair shop 3. Consider purchasing a new computer

Sounds like a defective battery or power adapter.

Make sure you have an original adapter. Some of the REPLACEMENT adapters do not work very well with these computers.

ALSO make sure you have the right replacement battery. For instance in the {ressario 3000 series, there are two different batteries and one will work with some machines, but the higher level machine requires a bigger battery, although it is in an identical case.

Check for blocked air passages - vacuum out the fan ports. (Don't use canned air - you'll just blow the dust inside, where it will act as an insulator and help things overheat.) well, sounds like your power cord took a dump on you check and make sure power cord light is working first i would suggest
takeing up to office depo or computer store or maybe some one you has a lap like your try the power cord on it and see if it boots up that computer or takea differnt power cord and try reboot it they sale altn. power cords for laptops (cheaper in ebay ,ubid or just type in power cords in your search engine ). i hope this helps lala linda

There is no reset button on this model so I would suggest, removing the ac adapter and battery form the computer and hold down the power button for at least a min. From there reattach the AC ONLY, then try to power the unit on. If it turns on great wait for it to get to windows then slip the battery in. If it doesn't even attempt to power on, lets look at the Ac power adapter. Does it have a light on it? Is it warm to the touch? It very could be that the ac adapter may have died and the system's battery doesn't have enough power left to run the computer. If this scenario happens you may want ot call HP or take the computer to a local tech where they can test the adapter for you and determine if it is working. The last thing to check is the power pin in the notebook. IS it very loose when plugging in the adapter? If it is, that would indicate a physical problem that won't be resolved unless a tech looks at it. I hope this help.

Check the ac adapter is the proper one for that laptop. Check the power jack is not damaged or loose. let laptop site without battery or power for a few hours. remove battery and retry power. try another ac adapter if that doesn't work, you may have a reset button but not likely to solve the problem. sounds like motherboard is damaged, or something blew.
