What does the code bL or 6L mean when I am trying to sew a button hole?

I am trying to sew a button hole on a project and the machine will start and get half way up one side of the button hole and then stop and show the code bL or 6L not sure which one it is. What does this mean and how do I fix it?

SOURCE: I cant get the machine to sew a buttonhole.

I am not familiar with your machine, but some buttonhole attachments require a lever be lowered and inserted into a tab.

Review your manual to see if a step was overlooked.

When I try to make a button hole, my machine starts to stitch and after a few seconds it stops, beeps, and flashes the code BL on the screen.

Call your Sears store sewing department and ask them if they can help you, your manual should tell wha the error code BL stands for. Usually the salesperson who sells the machines has some training on the machines. I used to love it when they gave lessons on their machines, now you are stuck on your own. You would think that they would try to give more customer service instead of here's the box, give me your money and go. Good luck, you deserve some TLC from them, after all you could have bought a machine anywhere and you chose them, it is up to them to earn your loyalty to their store.

Machine will not complete a buttonhole, keeps showing error code 6L. No error code listed in manual. Machine will only do first half of buttonhole and then shows code and stops.

I've been looking too and I found here http://sewing.patternreview.com/cgi-bin/sewingclasses/board.pl?t=18328that you need to put the bar behind the needle threader down. I think they call it a button hole stop? I don't know, but it worked. I didn't even know it existed. But it solved my problem. On my Kenmore it looks like a black lever and you pull it down. It tells the button-holer that you are at the end of the hole and it needs to backup. nifty, kind of.
