Earphones output is mono when plugged into a computer.

If you used bluetooth to connect in the car, you may have to go back to the settings menu and reconfigure for audio jack output. If you used a direct plugin connection, try plugging your computer speakers in to the players and playing through them. If that works, your earphones may be bad.

This could the way the music is been recorded if it is strero or mono, also do confirm the earphone if one side of the earphone is faulty or not, if bad replace with the exact type and if not the media itself is faulty, you can take it the an electronics repair shop for them to diagonised the appliances... It sounds like the jack on your iPod is a bit dirty inside causing static. Here are some things to try, assuming that your tracks are all stereo and none of them are mono tracks.

Try this:

1. Power the unit off and the speakers off it they have a power switch.
2. Get some rubbing alcohol and a paper towel.
3. Pour a cap full of alcohol on the paper towel and grab the plug on your speakers.
4. Twist the towel around tightly to clean the plug.
5. Repeat this process on the earphone plug.
6. Now take the speaker plug and push it in and out of the speaker jack about 20 times.
7. Whatever you do, DO NOT pour any alcohol into the jack socket on the iPod itself.

If the problem continues, test your earphones and speakers with another product.

If they work fine, the jack in your iPod needs to be rewired.

If they don't work, then you may want to take your iPod, the speakers and earphones to your local Radio Shack store and show the Sales Associate what the problem is.

You may need to buy a stereo-to-mono audio adapter -OR- new headphones and new speakers.

If you still have problems after all of this, it may be time for a new iPod.

You are using stereo headset, but it is a mono output. So you need either mono headset or an adapter that will allow the mono sound to go to stereo output for a stereo headset.

Some devices such as yours have a 4 conductor jack, (used for earphones and microphone) and most earphones have a 3 conductor plug. They are not compatible. This would be my first guess. Second is earphones and earbuds get tossed around, put into pockets, etc. The cords can get damaged, and not be visible from the outside as the wires inside are very delicate. I would try a set that works in a different device.

You should make sure the headphone Jack is fully inserted with a firm push. It sounds basic, but it's happened to me several times.

Go into settings, EQ, and try out some of the EQ settings.

i have the same problem. its not the headphones. its the itouch. its something to do with the jack-i think. because whenever i jiggle the plug eventually i can hear some of my music eventually. its a pain. and so how do i fix that ish?

Reset the player - double check the sound settings in the menu
if these methods fail, run the recovery method mentioned in the user's manual
if the recovery even fails, then it is a hardware issue with the headphone jacks and the player will have to be replaced
