Try to reset the printer. Reset the system by holding down the OK, Cancel, Black, and Color buttons down at the same time and turn the printer off. Keep holding the buttons down until the printer shuts off and the turn it back on. You will have to turn the printer off twice and then it will recalibrate. Make sure you have new cartiges in the printer so that it can reset.

possible causes of this:

• loose or improperly installed ink cartridge
  
• damaged cartridge
• dirty print head

Solutions:

• check cartridge connection, try to remove and reconnect
• replace damaged cartridge
• clean printhead using the printhead cleaning utility software of your printer
  

You can check at www.partsurfer.hp.com if you type in the error under support you might find an answer. Most times caused by generic inks and it's time for a new printer.

Filling your cartridge with non-HP ink won't cause an error. There are basically two reasons for ink system failure, The cartridge is no good or the ink system has failed. Some of these machines can be reset. But, try replacing cartridge first.

I had the same problem and this is how I fixed it... It is hard to get the cover off (and it's not the top cover, but the one on the right side as facing), but once you do follow the directions below.

- Turn off power and unplug from power source.
- Open right side of printer (looking at the front).
- Disconnect by pulling gently, both white flat ribbon cables off the main circuit board.
- Plug in power source and turn printer on. Wait till you get a error message and push "Ok".
- Unplug power source.
- Reconnect the flat ribbon cables by aligning and carefully pushing into the conectors on the main circuit board.
- Plug in power source and turn printer on (Printer preparing occurred).
