Netgear router simply stopped connecting to the internet both wirelessly and ethernet

It has not been working, just stopped one day. Usually it's ATT internet issue, but this time they fixed everything on their end and it didn't work with the router. I have no idea how to fix the router. I'm suppose to check info on it, but don't have the ability. It won't let me get online even with the ethernet cable connected to fix it. I can probably call ATT to figure out how to get to the Netgear Log in despite this, but I don't know the username or password. I was going to reset it, but am warned to have a lot of information before I do(ex:ISP Username, ISP password, IP addresses, Wireless Security keys, opened ports, opened services), none of which I am sure of. I hear there is default info. for the model router, but am unable to find it online. Please help me get this router working again. I'm wasting netflix and xbox live money, plus if I ever get a laptop working, I'd really like to use it wirelessly.

Hi,

Default username is : admin
Default password is : password

Don't worry about IP addresses etc. it is automatic by default when you reset your Router. And you can just add a password for wireless IF you want to after you reset it.

SOURCE: problems with netgear wireless router

picolas and nannysboy,

You can setup your router any way you like after accessing it. You don't need software for NetGear. All you have to do to access the control panel is:

  1. Open your browser.
  2. Type in this ip address - http://192.168.1.1
  3. Configure the router as you see fit. It's fairly simple and has built in help guides.
If you cannot connect by wireless, do the above while connected by a LAN cable (looks like a telephone cable, only fatter and wider).

The router should be connected as follows:
  1. WAN port directly to cable/dsl modem.
  2. Any port (1-4) running out to your computer.
Please let me know if this helps. Good luck!

SOURCE: Connecting Laptop wireless and Desktop wired to the router

Do you need to see the desktop or just share folders from each other? If the latter then you need to do the following:

Use Windows Explorer and select a folder you want to share. Right click and select sharing and security.

On the sharing tab click on Share this folder. Enter a share name ( I like to enter the PC name _folder name; Rick1_Downloads)

Click on Permissions. If your ok with everyone using the PC's and Laptops having access then highlight Everyone and click on Full Control.

Do this on each PC and Laptop.

That should be it or darned near close.

SOURCE: I have a NetGear Wireless Router which wont connect to internet.

Verify that you can connect to the internet without the router by hooking the cable from the dsl modem to your computers NIC.

If you can connect to the internet that way the problem is with the router. press and hold the reset button on the back of the router to reset it to the factory settings. (this just makes it easy to determine the problem) if this corrects the problem you can setup your security again

How to Set Up a Netgear WGR614 V5 Wireless Router
Netgear routers--like all wireless routers--give you the opportunity to access the Internet with your laptop or wireless-adapted computer from virtually anywhere in your house within range of the router's WiFi signal. Though slightly different in appearance from other router models by Netgear, the WGR614 V5 acts similar in its setup process as others such as the WGT624 or WNR1000 series routers.
Things You'll Need:
Netgear WGR615 V5 routerNetgear resource CDEthernet wireBlue network wireModemComputer
1 Prepare to install the Netgear router. Log off and shut down your computer system. Turn your Internet modem off and/or disconnect its power supply from the electrical outlet. Take out the contents of the Netgear router box and verify that all the essentials are present: the resource CD, the yellow wire and the router itself.
2 Connect the Internet modem to the Netgear WGR614 v5 router. Locate the yellow Ethernet wire running from one end of the Internet modem to the computer's Ethernet port. Unhook the computer-end of the Ethernet wire and insert this end into the port on the router labeled "Internet." After inserting, confirm that the wire runs from the modem to the router.
3 Connect the Netgear router to the computer. Grab the blue cable supplied with the router. Securely insert one end of the blue cable into one of the four "LAN" ports on the router (the "LAN" ports are labeled with numbers from 1 to 4). Insert the other end of the blue wire into your computer's Ethernet port.
4 Start your network devices. Turn on or connect your Internet modem to an electrical outlet. Wait for at least two minutes to allow the modem to fully boot. Plug the Netgear router into the wall or electrical outlet as well, and wait one to two minutes. Turn on your computer.
5 Look at the Netgear router to verify that all lights are on. The "power," "Internet" and "wireless" icon symbols on the front of the router should be solidly lit. One of the four "LAN" ports should also be lit with either a green or amber color.
6 Insert the resource CD that came with your Netgear router to launch the "welcome" screen. Select "Router Setup" from the menu to begin the "Smart Wizard" setup application. Read and follow the setup steps, including naming your SSID (secure set identifier) or "network name" and setting a level of wireless security. Finish the setup process, ending with the registration of your Netgear router.
7 Verify that your Netgear router has been set up correctly. Open an Internet browser from both the computer that is connected to the router and on a computer that has a wireless card or adapter. Surf to your favorite Internet sites to verify your connection is working. Open your "network connections" utility on your operating system and make sure it shows that you're connected to your own wireless network.

I've used a Netgear DG834GT with no problems, but when the wireless part stopped working, I've changed to a DGN1000. The original router will still work when connected to my PC, but the new one says I need...

If you change formats to Ethernet on the Netgear, simply run the CAT5/6 wire from the Cat output on the modem to the Ethernet port on the computer. A direct connection should always be AUTOMATIC as long as the operating system DRIVERS are up-to-date.

CAN I USE THIS ROUTER WITH A MODOM INTERNET CONNECTION ?

You shouldnt have any issues connecting your router to the home modem, simply connect the ethernet cord into the internet port of the router. It is a plug and play device meaning once it's plugged in you should be online.

How to connect to the internet

You should have a home modem from and ISP (Internet Service Provider) Also If you have a router you need to plug the Ethernet Cord (the cord that looks like a Giant phone line) into the internet port of the router, Now if the router is a wireless router and you want to use the internet wirelessly you need to open your wireless connections and you will see your router in the list. Simply double click the connection and it will automatically connect for you. If you do not have a wireless router and you want to connect more than one computer to the internet,Simply keep the ethernet cord plugged into the internet port on the router and you should have 4 other ports next to each other. Plug another ethernet cord into port 1 and plug into the back or side of computer. That's it. I hope this helped have a good day

Ethernet Cord for Router?

Hi,
I want to tell you that how can you get your password back or reset your wireless password.

1. Work on your wired computer which is connected with the netgear router using ethernet cable
2. Make sure on the rear side of your netgear router you can see four ethernet slots and one internet slot.
3. One internet slot is only for your ISP modem and rest of the four slots you can use any computer to connect with that using ethernet cable.
4. Click on start - Run - then type in "cmd" press enter and you will get black screen. under the black screen just type "ipconfig" you can see some information on your screen search for default gateway numbers.
5. Once you get default gateway open IE and type those numbers without anything else then press enter.
6. It will ask you for user name and password by default "admin" and password is " password "
7. Once you click ok it will open netgear setting page
8. On the left side you can see wireless setting which is under "setup" then click on that option
9. On the middle of the screen you can scroll down that page at the bottom you can see your security key or passphrase.
10. Or you can type new password on the same screen and apply those settings
11. Now try again to connect your device wirelessly enter you existing password or new password which you have setup.
12. Make sure one thing more on the left hand side you have option called "Router Status"
13 Once you click on that at the middle of the screen show you router status and you can find the option called "internet port"
14. We are getting ip under internet port
15. If we re getting ip address then you can simply try to connect wirelessly otherwise please run setup wizard to configure your router. you should getting ip under internet port.

I believe these steps help you to resolve your problem

Thanks & Regards.

mairelina, if all was well 2 days ago then resetting the router should fix your problem. usually a small button on the back of the router.

chelliepooh, you need to check that the router's wireless function is on. connect using the ethernet and go to the config page (usually 192.168.1.1) make sure wireless is on and security is set to wpa-psk.
