I had to restore win xp in my dv1000 laptop. Butafter restoring my laptp is not booting. during booting my media card reader light automatically glows and win xp does not boot and the computer hangs in the win xp loading screen. Could you please on how to solve this problem.

If there is no media in the card reader, press F8 after the laptop beeps during boot and this should give you a Safe Mode boot screen, choose Safe Mode and then your default OS listed. After you get your desktop, restart the laptop.
If when you press F8 you get a boot from what screen, choose your hard drive and then immediately press F8 again to get the Safe Mode boot screen.
You need to either remove the flash media or use Safe Mode and then restart to reset the Boot Ini information script.
Let me know if this works for you or not, as we may need to take another measure.

With your capability to do something like that on your own, we may and I emphasize may, be able to sort this out. But, on the other hand, when hardware fails, and on a laptop it can be a real problem.
When you chose to disable your card reader, what did you do to effectively determine it was the card reader and not the card or a failure of the hardware and not the driver?

The reason for the hang was only that the media card is being treated as a removable hard drive, that's how the BIOS reads it. Since it is not bootable the way it was, removing it should and did allow you to boot up when you removed it.
You only need to go into System Setup during prePost boot and change the Boot Order so the removable media card is out of the loop prior to the hard drive.
You can format media cards so they are bootable, but normally you don't want to use the Windows format tool. We techs take a Wn98 bootup disc and copy the contents, hidden and all, over to a media card. Then we put diagnostic tools on the media card like **** Anti Virus which will scan without windows running and catch boot sector and bios viruses.
So, it shouldn't be the reader, just the media in the reader.

Overheating is more likely to cause a shutdown. You need to do some troubleshooting. Remove all USB attached devices. Roll back system with System Restore under Safe Mode (press F8 during boot and choose Safe Mode). For Win 7 - Start > Start > Search type System Restore. For XP - Is Start > All Programs > Accessories > System Restore. Now choose a date prior to problem starting. You may have to try a few dates.
Uninstall last program(s) that was installed, again in safe mode.
Disable startup programs. Go to Start > Run (search in Win 7) and type MSConfig. In Startup tab, uncheck anything that you don't want Windows to load automatically. It will make Windows boot faster and use less resources while running. This just disables them in startup. Programs will still load, but when only you initiate. In fact, in your case uncheck all. TEST.

1 put widows XP CD in to your CD drive
2 restart your PC
3 it will boot your CD just put Enter
4 if not then selact boot option by presing F12 0r F2
5 it will start reding your CD

Click Start and open Run on the Start menu. 2. Type (or copy and paste) C:\WINDOWS\system32\restore\rstrui.exe in the Run box. 3. This will open System Restore now select the first option (restore my computer to an earlier time) and click next. 4. Select a date when your network last worked and complete restoration. Do not worry about selecting the wrong date you can always undo any restore within system restore you will select undo last restore.
Hi, You are correct HP do not provide the recovery disks for this Media Center anymore.
I've just about searched the net for anyone who may have recovery CD's for sale but no no avail.
If you can still get into the operating system use HP Backup and Recovery Manager, its quick and user-friendly. To run,
simply go to All Programs > HP Backup & Recovery > HP Backup
and Recovery Manager.
With HP Backup & Recovery Manager, file restoration is easy. To
recover a deleted file, simply use the Restore Wizard.
For a full
system restoration, press the F11 key during boot up and then select
"Recover PC" from the menu if there is a recovery partition available (sometimes you have to hold down Ctrl and hit the F11 key on boot up)
Other than that you may have to purchase a Windows XP or Windows XP Media Center installation CD from a reputable store like PC World for example.
In order to format and install operating system again you need a dos bootable floppy or cd to format.... Best solution is that try windows xp or windows vista bootable cd ,it will format your hardd drive and also will install the operating system....
