Hopefully you can tighten it up. If it is a push through set up where the valve pushes through the grommet and that is all that seals it you will have to replace the grommet with a new one. Many small engine shops will have them or you may find one at an auto parts store. You will have to take the old one out and take it with you to match it up for size.

SOURCE: I have a portable generator that is leaking fuel

If the leak is: 1. in the fuel line it should be replaced. new lines with hose clamps. 2. If leak is from the carborator, the float may be stuck. Remove and inspect the float, being careful not to alter adjustments. Clean bowl with carb cleaner and replace. Be careful of the gasket installation. 3. The needle valve may need replacement. Check the tip for wear.
Alot of times somethig was in the tank and reached the needle and cleaning will solve the problem.

Gas leak at grommet on gas tank where gas lines enter and leave tank

Yes you should be able to replace the rubber tank seal that the fuel line goes through. Be sure to replace the fuel line(s) when you do.

Gas leak where gas lines enter and leave tank

Also, make sure that the vent for the fuel tank is working. the vent is either on the fuel cap itself or thru a device commonly known as a duck bill valve, so named because of the shape of the valve. All the vent does is allow a slight amount of air to enter the tank while the trimmer is running.

I have a generator that has a rubber grommet in the bottom of the fuel tank. The on/off valve insert directly into the grommet. I've already had the grommet disintergrate and the fuel line just fall...

You must be storing the generator with fuel in it. The ethanol in the gas breaks down the soft parts, usually in the carburetor, but looks like you got a bonus with this one. After you have repaired it, keep the tank empty and store the fuel in a separate can with the appropriate amount of fuel stabilizer.
