Serial number is written on a plate on the bottom of the computer along with the model number. If not consult with the manufacturer, if you reported the guarantee at the time of purchase.

Do a search on versa-check serial numbers.

go to the store you bought it from and tell them what happened, contact HP, look for spaces, hyphons, backslashes, etc.. and enter
(2nd option not recomended by me)

It definitely could be invalid, first, I would try making sure obviously that you are entering it correctly, check for I's instead of ones, O's and zeroes, etc. Try different combination of each and see if that gives you any luck.
If you have no success with that, contact microsoft and ask for a new serial key and after they check that you actually own the software they should gladly give you a new one.
