You need to download and install or use DVD that cam with it. And install ALL software. Then you can scan into Word, Insert Image. or scan with the HP ScanGear software you need the scan manager to do anything.
Also look in your manual it shows you all there.

start>steeting>printers and Fax> Setup Fax.You need windows XP CD for this Fax installation.IF manufacturer given software u r not need to install again.Just review the fax configuration by rigt click on fax icon then go to properties.

After downloading is finished, unplug the printer USB and run the
software that you downloaded. The software installer will tell you when
to connect USB.
HP does make this possible in several different ways. You can scan to OCR software (optical character recognition) or you can scan your document to an image. You may also scan directly to e-mail.
To do this, you will need to become familiar w/ the HP Director Software and w/ managing your scanning from the All-In-One itself.
