I can't figure out how to make the type on screen more visible. So many sites use grey or pale coloured text and is it almost invisible on my screen. Any suggestions? I have tried increasing the contrast and playing with the brightness but with no improvement in the contrast factor.

1: dim. (your Grey)
2: yellow for white screens.
3: intermittent. (or strobes)
4: dead.
all are. if used for 8hours a day for 5 years.
so in your case you are lucky it works at all.
buy a monitor for less than cost of repairs.
Your exact monitor working sells for $10 on fleabay,.

short answer, CCFL are dead.
pitch the pig to the trash, and upgrade.
2010 or 2011 and newer have LED back lamps.
forget CCFL every existed is the best practice.

Your video card (or driver) is probably to blame.
Try hooking a new monitor up to the computer to test this.
If so, try the advanced settings in control panel. Many cards give you the ability to manually alter the picture.
If that doesn't fix it, replace the card.
