I have an ASTAR portable DVD Player PD3020. I switched it on and the screen light-up for 20 seconds and then it came off. I opened the unit and heard a hissing sound near a Disc capacitor with these markings E18 250. I touched it and it was very very hot. What could be the reason for that capacitor to get so hot?

Excessive current flowing through it - could be due to the cap itself being shorted and/or the result of a series of bad parts connected to it which are driving it too hard. If you are able to read obscure capacitor and component values (and translate them) you might be able to replace the disc cap (and any other suspect parts if necessary) yourself with an equivalent value/voltage/cap type. I would suggest checking other components near the suspect cap (as well as other caps in the circuit) to see if they are unusually hot, and replace them if necessary. Also look in the power supply to the main board for any tell-tale burn marks, especially around surface-mounted parts and on the traces - starting with the power supply section.

A breakdown of the insulating material between the capacitor plates will do it. Th capacitor should be replaced with one about the same characteristics. An electronic parts suppler will help you identify a replacement.

SOURCE: Durabrand DUR-7 portable DVD player

Hi,

Most DVD players that would display such a message even with a known good disc inside signifies that the that the laser eye/lens is not reading the disc. This could probably be attributed to:
1. dirty, damaged, inverted, blank, un-finalized burned CDs or DVDs;
2. defective, weak burned-out laser eye/lens;
3. defective slider shafting (where the laser eye's carriage moves.

A few things you can try:
1. Use a CD cleaner (readily available from most computer shops);
2. use a can of compressed air and blow through the inside of the loaded disc area;
3. gently tap on the top cover where you estimate the reading/laser eye/lens would be;
4. gently press on the tray door once the disc is loaded.

Should this not be corrective, perhaps your best bet would be to seek the services of a qualified professional such as those in a Service Center. Alternately, your friendly neighborhood electronic shop should do just fine.

Hope this be of some help/idea. Pls post back how things turned up or should you need additional information.

Good luck and kindest regards.

SOURCE: portable dvd player says disc error

I purchased this DVD player with the knowledge that if there were any problems with it I could return it to Walmart. It has passed the 30 day warrentee with them and they tell me I have to deal directly with the manufacture. When I tracked the products company down through the internet and was referred to your websit I was shocked that troubleshooting a problem for a unit that is not a year old was going to cost me more money. I have no intention of paying for a service that should be free. I could understand having to pay for this service if the unit was older than 1yr. I work in retail and if we sent our customers on a wild goose chase for customer service where we knew there would be no fix then we would be out of buisness. Thank you for making me (and I am sure other customers) want to give the larger companies with more expensive unit my money . At least they have a better after sales services.

Duarbrand portable DVD players are no longer supported by Walmart because the company contracted to manufacture them is no longer in business. Ripoffreport.com has several complaints on the product line. Walmart has been exchanging the item.

SOURCE: Dual portable dvd player second screen not working

Sounds like it may be a bad linking cable or connection. Make sure you have cables inserted firmly and correctly. If possible, hook main unit to TV to be sure you are getting proper Video/Audio output.

Bad disc message

Some times dust can collect on the laser lens of the pick-up assembly and cause this. If you can get to the lens, which is under the disc tray where the disc gets clamped and starts to spin, it can be cleaned with a q-tip and alcohol. Just be gentle with it. If this doesnt help the pick-up assembly will have to be replaced.

Mintek DVD Portable

I had this problem. You need to reset your dvd player. To do this: For the reset, the unit should be on Wall power only, with the battery removed. You set the LINE SELECt (on the side next to the VIDEO plug) device to IN, turn the unit on, after 20 seconds switch it back to OUT.
