Remove the battery and unplug it from the wall. Try holding down the power button for about 8 seconds it should shut down. Just a suggestion! When you shut down your laptop make sure that your shutting down properly at the start button select shut down. If all else fails and this does not work.
You may want to have the power button checked out or the board. Or clean files out and start up programs add-ware or spy-ware may be preventing you from shutting down as well. This is also a common issue that causes very slow shutdowns on any computer system packed up junk having to close out. John

It seems that your computer needs to have a reinstall of your original setup, because the driver that tells it to shut down is not cooperating. Hopefully you have your original dvd/cd.

Xp shutdown not working laptop hp probook 4510

That's probably due to some software changes. Try to shutdown using the power button. Then reboot your laptop, check if problem still occurs.

OR you can do this...

1. Open RUN
2. Type shutdown -s -f -t 0
3. Press Enter

Thanks & Regards,

My laptop keeps shutting off it is a hp pavillion dv6000

1- Scanning computer to eliminate malwares, spywares and the viruses from your laptop.
2- Repairing and cleaning Windows registry.
These two tips are found to be very helpful to fix the laptop shutdown problem. Almost all the computer users surf internet which could result in viruses attacking your system. Some of these infections are really pesky and cause the machines to shutdown randomly.
The registry errors, however, are the internal errors and can become a cause of system crashes and freezes. The registry keys shall be in good health to keep a system perfect.
When I noticed my laptop keeps shutting down everytime, I tested the Intel Software Partner, RegInOut to fix the random shutdown problem with my laptop.

MY COMPUTER SHUTDOWN WHILE IT HAS A 60%REMAINING BATTERY. UNEXPECTED SHUTDOWN. MY LAPTOP CANT RESUME THE PROGRAMS RUNNING AND UNSAVED DOCUMENTS AFTER THE UNEXPECTED SHUTDOWN HAPPENS ..WHY MY OTHER LAPTOP...

If the Computer restarts randomly, then the issue might be due to any damaged Operating System Files.
But, if the Computer shuts down randomly, it is due to the Processor.
All the Processors will be designed in such a way that, if there is any overheating issues, the Computer will shut down randomly.
The overheating might occur due to the malfunction of the Cooling Fan in the Computer.
As this is a overheating issue, it would be better to get the Unit examined at the Service Center.
Replacing the Cooling Fan in the Computer should resolve the issue.

Stuck shutting down

Press and hold the power button for 10 seconds and then release it. This will shutdown the laptop regardless of what state it is in. If it still doesn't shutdown then disconnect the laptop from the powersupply and remove the battery. Note that this will count as an improper shutdown. After it shuts don put the battery back in and you should be able to power it up.
