Won't start but CPU fan vibrates but will not go full blast. Intermittant

Title: No startup but CPU Fan vibrates Product: Compaq Presario S5000NX PC Desktop with XP Pro Details: After shut-down, start button causes CPU fan to try to start and at times will go full blast for a second then returns to vibrate. Full blast does not last long enough for proper boot. Intermittent problem in that on one occasion machine booted and worked properly after fan worked went full blast. But when placed in sleep-mode and resumed problem on wake-up. Drive lights all work. Power supply light OK.. When fan vibrates, there is a ticking noise as if it is trying to start. Normal startup for this machine is for CPU fan to come on full blast for maybe 10-sec' boot occurs, then fan slows to a quiet running speed. "Full blast" means a high speed with lots of fan noise.

Mea Culpa - I should have noted in the question that I did replace the fan and I also removed and cleaned the heatsink and put new compound on the CPU. Heat is not a problem, everything is cool, even that one time when it started and booted properly. It's a real mystery. Thanks for your kind attention.

It appears you have a faulty CPU fan and it is causing the CPU to overheat and shut down.
I suggest you replace the CPU fan. remove any dust from the heatsink and put new heatsink compound on the CPU/heatsink.

Any fan that is making noise you would need to replace. There is also never a need to use alcohol to clean a fan. Some computer air or a light wipe down will do just fine.
If you have any other questions let me know.
Thanks,

I don't see how removing the battery would help but tried for the same problem and it did in fact do nothing.
The fan races but the system never makes it to the Bios and never displays anything on the monitor. I suspect a chip is fried on the MoBo.

Maxum52, please post the solution if you found one.

SOURCE: Thinkcentre M55 8806 power on off problem

May be your computer motherboard wires connection get loose or getting moisture in wires. Or there may be some earthing problem in ur power switch. First, check the wires connection & tighten up properly. if problem persists, check the earthing by power tester. Check you RAM if it is properly tight in the jack.

Compaq presario cq62 won't start but the caps lock led blinks continuously and the wifi led remains on continuously, tried new cpu, worked for a while and started same problem again.

those are blink codes, learn to count them.
if you pulled the CPU i bet you that you used the wrong heat sink compound.
The CPU shuts off all by itself if too hot. your job is to get the fan working and the heat sink working and that thermal compound right.

as the blink codes we are not HP here, ever

Overheating on Compaq Presario Notebook Model C501NR

OverheatingWhen the CPU overheats then it will shut down (i.e. thermaloverload) and won't boot up again until it has cooled down. If this is theproblem is not fixed then the CPU will eventually fail.
A faulty fan causes the problem or the fan and heat sink assembly are cloggedwith dust.
Check the CPU fan to see if it spins freely, if not replace the fan.
If the fan and heat sink is clogged with dust the remove the dust and make surethe vents are clear and dust free. Use a small brush and can of compressed airto do this.

I have a compaq s5000nx that keeps shutting down and restaring after 20 min have not done any thing to it

Hello,

Open the case and blow any dust out of the heatsink (under the cpu fan). Overheating is the main cause of sudden shutdowns. You may also want to apply fresh thermal paste between the cpu and heatsink. Please let me know if this helps or not.

The CPU fan is being detected, but there is a problem with compatability or there is a fault in the fan it's self. Have you tried your original fan?

My HP Compaq CQ61-445ed is making a weird vibrating noise after 5 mins when i startup or earlier, when i give it a soft smash you hear nothing and then after 2-4 minutes it comes again..

The noise is coming from one of the fans in your computer. This most commonly happens with the CPU/GPU fan. If you are a DIY-er, then you can take apart the casing, and blow some compressed air into the exposed fan. This should clear out any dust or debris lodged in the case. If you aren't comfortable doing it by yourself, I recommend visiting a computer store or a friend that's good with a small screwdriver, and have them do this for you.

Compaq presario cpu cooling fan will not start spinning unless "helped" with tip of pen to spin over.If I dont start it manually,I get No cpu fan message, and shut down.I just replaced fan,as old had broken...

If the CPU fan speed is too slow or not working at all, the computer will shut itself off automatically to prevent damage to CPU from overheating. You may end up having to throw more money at the problem and get a new fan. I went to Compaq's web site, looked up your particualr computer, found out what type of fan you needed, and I did some research. I recommend getting the fan in the following link. It's very cheap, and has good reviews. The other fans on the site all have bad reviews. Hope this helps.

Have compaq s5000nx that needs a cooling fan. fan was missing and I don't know where to plug in small lead to board.

well theres always at least 2 plugins for a fan ussualy its located near the cpu and the other one near where the power supply plugs in theyre both white with 3 prongs and the the lead when inserted clicks in and it only fits in those 2 spots .prosses of elimination.and if u look with a magnafying glass and a flsh light it should be written on the board beside it fan or cpu fan both are good to go. good luck.
