I bought it open box at Walmart. I called Sony customer service and they told me to hold down the eject, play, and stop button at the same time until I see "TLK OFF" and it never appeared on the screen. Now the Sony Tech says to return it to the store, that it's defective. Any other things I could try to get it working?

I had the same problem and sent an email to Sony. Here's the answer (it worked) :
Go to page 53 of Operating Instructions Manual and reset the player as indicated.
If you do not have the manual, here's what to do : Press Power On button. Power On light will come up. Now, Looking at front panel you have (at right side) 5 switches : Play, Pause, Stop, Rewind, and Fast Forward. Stop is the center switch.
Now, with Power On light on (it lasts only about 30 seconds), HOLD DOWN the STOP button and PRESS POWER ON button (the power on light has to be ON). This will reset the player. It worked with mine one.

Follow this procedure to lock and unlock the disc tray.
IMPORTANT: This procedure will only work while a disc is inserted in the player and when the disc is playing.
While a disc is playing in the Blu-ray Disc player, press the SYSTEM MENU button on the remote control.
After the System Menu screen appears, slowly press 0 0 0 0 7 6 6 9 using the number pad on the remote control.
NOTES:
If the procedure has been performed correctly, the disc will stop playing and the player will go in the Resume mode.
Each time this procedure is performed the disc tray will either lock or unlock.
