LG Microwave ran empty for 20 minutes

Yes...., they thought they pressed Timer and didn't. It was still running when I saw it. I quickly opened the door to stop it and everything went black. I hope there's just a fuse burned out, it's only 2 years old and built in. Will this require a service call or is it something simple we can do ourselves? Help Please!!!

I hate to pay a service man and then have him say he can't fix it.... or it costs what a new one would....yikes!

  • Anonymous Apr 23, 2012

It's being sold for $279 now, and I have to pay installation. So about $375 to replace. I thought it odd it kept running a full 20 min. and didn't stop and go black until I opened the door to stop it. Why would it go just as I opened the door? Are you familiar with LG microwaves?

  • Anonymous Apr 23, 2012

Oh... I hear what you are saying. I was hoping that the fact it kept running it didn't burn anything out - just blew a fuse when I interrupted it. Does it possibly sound like product/manufacturer issue since it did not stop it? Maybe they would stand behind it (I'm hoping)

I recommend you have a service man come in because it is more than a fuse, the keypad control board will need to be checked along with the rest of the system.

I can understand your concern especially when microwave ovens are cheaper than what they use to be, but from your description you have 2 or 3 issues that will require a professional, I guess it will come down to what the oven is worth, If the oven cost you $100. to $200. new, two years ago, then replace the microwave, repair cost will probably exceed that.

  • Anonymous Apr 23, 2012

Yes I'am! when you opened the door the cycle was interrupted probably blowing the fuse or worse taking out the inverter board. But what I'am more concerned about is the fact the timer did not shutdown the microwave oven indicating a problem with the keypad control board, that part alone will cost $100.00 and up.

  • Anonymous Apr 23, 2012

That is worth a try considering it is only 2 years old, I think if you push hard enough you may get the service at no charge because no company likes bad publicity.

  • Anonymous Apr 23, 2012

Yes! i feel it is a manufacture issue and they should honour what they sell.

Glad to be of service, good luck.

SOURCE: Panasonic NN- A712 combination Microwave 1000w - Switches off after 20 seconds

The 22 seconds is the giveaway.

In most cases, this is a problem with the inverter or a bad magnetron.

Due to the lethal voltages used and produced, I do not recommend that an inexperienced person work on these.

I would recommend that you contact your nearest Panasonic-authorized servicer.

SOURCE: Need help with DACOR Microwave model PCOR30S, w/the minute timer

This is a problem in one of the damper-related components, most likely the switch, but it may also be the motor or the damper door.

The damper is a door inside that opens or closes depending on cooking mode. If the controller senses that the door is not in the right position, it will shut down the cook cycle.

Sharp models (and Sharp models made for Dacor) stop after 59 seconds.

See the attached sample photo for a typical damper assembly.

We have a very close service manual and have uploaded it to our site here to help you.

You will need the
free Adobe Reader to view or print it.

If a switch is all you need, we offer a universal type for only $5 postpaid which you can order here.

If your model is PCOR30, and you need a new motor, the part number is 66756 and you can order it here.

My son ran the microwave (Maytag mmv4205aab) for several minutes (thinking he was running the timer). It now acts as if there is no power to the whole unit. I tried the breaker with no success. Shall I...

When it's run empty, that will cause the magnetron to overheat.

If it gets hot enough, the magnetron's thermostat will open.

Normally it should cool down and reset, turning the oven back on.

If not, the thermostat may have failed hard, and would have to be replaced.

The fuse may be bad (also or instead).

There should be a "mini-manual" (tech sheet) hidden inside the unit behind the control panel or hidden on the left side behind the grille, which is very helpful when troubleshooting, testing, and locating components.

Oven won't function after 5 minutes of cook time with nothing in

It's posible that since it was running empty, the magnetron overheated and a thermal cutout or thermostat located on the magnetron opened.

Magnetrons may be protected by a thermostat, which will reset when it cools, or a thermal fuse, which is a one-time use device. It is also possible that in some cases, a thermostat will fail when opened.

In the worst case the magnetron may be damaged due to running empty.

I hope this will solve your issue.

Good Luck.

If my solution proves useful please accept it.

LG microwave no longer heats!

It sounds as though you may have run the microwave while empty, which can damage the magnetron.

Not that I'm optimistic, but the first thing to try is a "hard reset". Unplug it from the power line for a few minutes, plug it back in, set the clock, then try again.

Let us know if the hard reset doesn't fix it.

Otherwise it likely needs a new magnetron.
