Why does my portable hard drive not show up on my computer

You formatted the hard drive on your laptop in NTFS and the MAC cannot read and write to this formatted NTFS hard drive.
THE FIX
Format the hard drive using your laptop BUT this time format it in FAT32.
The MAC can read and write to a FAT32 formatted hard disk, so now you can exchange data between the MAC and the Windows laptop.

Check to see if there is a file in the root directory called "autorun.inf". If there is, either delete it, or move it to a backup folder. Now you should be able to rename your portable hard drive.

If you don't see the new name take effect right away, Safely remove the drive, unplug it and plug it back in. The changes should show up immediately.

There should be no need for a manual for a USB 2 External Hard Drive. Simply plug it into a USB Port on the Computer and select it with Windows Explorer. Basically, It will assume a Drive Letter other than C: or D: dependent upon how many drives you computer has. A Tower with a CD Read Only drive and a CD or DVD burner drive will have C: primary Hard Drive, D: typically assigned to the read only drive and E: CD or DVD Burner drive. Windows explorer will display all Connected Drives. If it doesn't show up there it is probably a fractured wire in it's cable or a damaged contact it the USB connector on the cable.

This is a mechanical failure of the drive. You will need to get a new one. Recovering the files off of this can be very expensive.

change the usb and then check else if its working or not..check also if its working on any other computer..if its not even detectable at other computer as well then the hdd itself must be the faulty..contact the manufacturer

According to the microsoft site your external hard drive which is the Samsung G2 HX-MU050DC doesn't need any additional software it is automatically installed when connected..Maybe try to connect it to other USB port I preferred you connect it at the back of your CPU..If this doesn't work try to connect your external hard drive to other computer if it still doesn't work. sad to say but the problem is your external hard drive..

Your portable harddisk is not working because the hardisk inside is bad or damage, try to change the hardisk inside. it also happen to me and when i chage the hardisk it works.

The hard drive is plug and play, no software is required. All you have to do is plug the hard drive into a USB slot. If it doesn't work then you know the hard drive is bad and you would have to get another one.

Have you tried using another USB cable? If you haven't then try it first and if that doesn't work, it is possible that your external HDD is busted.
