The sense of smell is a wonderful thing. Usually when you smell something burning and you shut it off quick enough it can be repaired. When you see plumes of smoke it's usually too late. If you have a reputable repairman he will be able to tell you if it's repairable or not. My gut feeling is, you should bury it in a quiet spot in the back yard. Sorry :(

I have Hoover Widepath Bagless 12 Amp Windtunnel vacuum. Yesterday I was vacuuming and smelled smoke and it shut itself off. Today I cleaned out the filters (they weren't bad) made sure nothing was...

Hi There,

When a vacuum cleaner smokes, it is usually only one of two possible problems.

It could either be that your motor burned up, or that your belts burned. The belts on this particular model are notorious for breaking, but the fact that your machine doesn't come on at all after this happened, sounds like it may be the motor.

Both of these issues have a unique smelling smoke. If the smoke smelled like an electrical burning smell, this indicates it's your motor. If the smoke smelled more like burning rubber, then it's probably your belts.

If the smoke smelled like burning rubber, here's a video that we've recorded showing step by step how to inspect, trouble shoot, and replace the belts on your vacuum cleaner. If you open it up and the belts are still in tact, then this probably is a more serious problem of the motor burning out.

. I'd be more then happy to walk you through more advanced diagnosing if this doesn't fix your problem, please just use the comment box here on the Fixya repair page.

If this was helpful to you, please be so kind and rate my repair helpful, or leave some feedback for me. This is really appreciated by the Fixya community if the repair solution was able to fix your problem.

Thanks again,

Chris Jones

Burning smell from oil heater

Pull the controls off the front, and inspect the thermostat connections to see if they are burned up,also the other switches will do the same thing. If you can`t see a problem, then the element is burned out, throw it away and buy a new one.

TV shuts off by itself and has a burning smell

mine is doing the same thing but i was able to pinpoint it to a capacitor arching and smoking. haven't replaced it yet so i'm not sure if it's just a bad capacitor or a more involved issue.

Burning smell from Microwave

If you clean any appliances always plug out the unit power supply do spray any liquid in the unit that can enter inside the control, instead just wipe it with rug not spray. In this situation you have to call for a qualified technician. Maybe there are some wires that burned or rust in the control that cause the short circuit inside the unit..

Stuck on "Hello"

This product is known for freezing up. You can get it fixed but it will cost more than you paid for the machine. Best advice, throw it away and buy a name brand recorder. The company will stand behind their products instead of dodging their responsibility of making a decent machine and ripping everyone off. I learned the hard way too, and yes, it hurts the pride.
