No... you are not in a microwave induced time warp...
Your microwave oven needs a "reboot". The same thing happened to me.
Unplug your microwave oven, wait about a minute (more or less), plug it back in. Try setting/running your kitchen timer, boil water, etc. Your timer software on the microwave should be reset.

Bad door switch, look at the wires going to the switch and see if any look browned or like they were hot. Make sure each switch clicks when you push the plunger down and release it. I always replace the switch with one that has 1/4 inch terminals as they hold up much better then the ones with the smaller 3/16 terminals. Just beefier and better.

Sparks when cooking
Make sure no metal item (forks-spoons or oven rack) is touching the outer wall of the microwave. That will cause sparks. If all that is OK then there is usually a metal fan type blade in the microwave top called a stirrer blade that may be out of place and rubbing the cavity causing sparks. Try to pin point the spark area so you know where to look for the problem. Sparks usually mean metal is touching metal somewhere.

Is it worth repairing or replacing a control/circuit board in this microwave?
I agree that the cost of the repair outweighs the cost of replacing the whole MW. It appears that the solid state device that takes the keypress from the keypad to control the light circuit is shorted so the light stays on all the time. Most likely from a lightning surge. Use it the way it is. You will hurt nothing without a light in the socket. My info indicates this is a model from the late 1990's so it is about 15 years old. It is not hard to changeout a microwave. You might need some help lifting it into place. Choose one as similar as possible to the old one.

After 16 years, I should think you had your money's worth from this machine.
There are a few arguments for fixing it, if it's repairable, but a new one will be more powerful while being more efficient too. (use less electric)
Less radiation leakage too.. (pacemaker exposure?)
Perhaps you should first try shopping around to see if you find one that you like, and that fits in the space you have for it, etc. If you buy a new one, get a good one. Don't go cheap.
If one seems to make good sense to you, then buy it. If nothing looks good to you then find a repair shop to take old one to.
Why would you keep old one? Well first of all, they don't make them like they used to. Lot of new ones are noisy and rattle a lot. Don't last nearly as long. Many new ones have problems early.
Old ones are lower power, which is slower, BUT food heats more evenly because of it. Less prone to exploding food.

The light bulbs in the
Hi,
When the microwave lights don't work, the problem is either the light
bulbs, or the relay on the display control board. If you've already
replaced the light bulbs and that didn't fix the problem, the relay is
shorted and the display control board will need to be replaced. It's very common for the relay on the control board to short out when
the bulb does because the relay is very weak. The only fuses on this
microwave cut out the entire display and all the lights. There is
absolutely nothing between the control board relay and the lights other
than wire.
You just unplug the microwave, then remove the screws going into the
top plastic vent grille. Remove the vent and that will expose a screw
at the top of the control panel. Remove that screw and the control
panel will pull up and off. That will allow you to access and replace
the control board.
Let me know,if needed further assistance.
Hope i helped you.
Thanks for using ' Fixya ' and have a nice day!!

Replace handle on whirpool microwave
The door handle can easily be replaced on MOST microwave ovens by removing the inner door panel that goes around the perimeter of the glass. The following link explains how to access and replace the door handle:
http://www.fixya.com/support/r3696942-microwave_oven_door_handle_replacement
The average cost for a replacement handle usually runs about $20 - $40. Replacements may be purchased at the websites listed in the link I provided. If you have not purchased a new handle yet, the part number is 4359474 (Black) and 4359473 (White) and costs about $30.
The door handle is a simple repair that can be done with the door in place, or with the door removed. You do not have to uninstall the oven if this is an over the range model.
NOTE: If you wish to remove the door, all you need to do on most models is open the door all the way and lift straight up at the hinges.
If you have any questions, please post back and let me know. I hope this helps you.
