This switch is designed to dim incandescent lamps. It has nothing in its description about being used with CFL (compact fluorescent lamps) types. If you are attempting to dim standard CFL types, it will not work.

CFL's are available in both dim-able and standard types. As you may have guessed, only those marked as "dim-able" will work with a dimmer switch. Dim-able CFLs cost slightly more than standard CFLs but may be controlled by any switch. Dimmer switches may only control incandescent and other type lamps that specifically state they are compatible with dimmer switches.

If you are attempting to dim incandescent lamps, make sure that you are not trying to dim lamps with a total wattage greater than the dimmer can handle. Most dimmer switches are rated for 600 watts, if you have two dimmer switches under one wall plate, the wattage rating drops to about 500 watts. This de-rating is because of the heat the switches create. There are dimmer switches that can dim more than 600 watts, but the price skyrockets for a 1000 watt dimmer, and keeps climbing.

If your wattage is within the limits of the dimmer, check the bulbs. If they are ok, the dimmer may have failed and require replacement.

I have 115 v at the bulb receptacle but the bulb doesn't light up...whats the problem its a rab ff150 hps fixture

Does the bulb work in a different fixture? Sometimes the base of the bulb does not make contact with the terminal inside the fixture. unplug the fixture and then see if you can bend the center "not" connector up a little.

We have Lithonia 2 bulb fixtures in a recessed ceiling. We currently have 2 (25) watt bulbs in them. What wattage can I upgrade to ??

The ballast inside the fixture is rated to operate 2 25w bulbs. You can't put higher wattage bulbs in this fixture, unless you change the ballast. Sorry.

My fluorescent shop light fixtures sometimes does not go on and sometimes the bulbs just flicker without giving much light. What's wrong?

If your shop is in your garage, and it is cold outside, the two-pin fluorescent tubes don't work very well. Garage lighting (fluorescent) should be the HO (high output) type. It operates on the same voltage. The tubes are not interchangeable. You need a HO fixture. If your shop is inside your house, then flickering tubes (assuming that you tried changing them out with new ones) indicate a bad ballast inside the fixture. You can either change out the ballast, or for almost the same price, replace the fixture.

Fixture not working after bulb change

"CFLs" Compact Fluorescent Bulbs (with built in ballast) must be labeled as dimmable to be used on a dimmer circuit.

Traditional fluorescent fixtures must have a dimmable ballast installed inside and can be used with standard fluorescent lamps.

Fluorescent lamps must be sized to match the ballast. CFL's are matched at the factory, but others are not. Older fluorescent lamp fixtures have a ballast inside. A type rating is to operate (2) 48 inch / 40 watt lamps. Newer fluorescent lamps are rated for 32 watts, and these will not work - or will have a greatly reduced life.

If you installed CFL's, the first thing I would do is install regular incandescent lamps and see if it works as expected. If not, something else is wrong - otherwise - make sure you've got the right lamps in the fixture.

Newly installed Hunter remote will work light and fan if only 2 of the 3 bulbs are installed.

Did you install the correct wattage? If you put in 2-60 watt try 3-40 watt instead .

I have a problem with my kitchen's recessed lighting. For some reason, the six bulbs will go out during the evening hours, then come back on. There is no pattern, with one, two, three or four of them out...

It sounds as if you may have higher wattage bulbs and/or the wrong type of bulb installed in the can fixtures than the recessed cans are rated for.

When the wattage of the bulbs is higher than the rating of the fixture, and/or the wrong bulbs are being used, the recessed can's thermal overload device will shut off the light, to prevent damage and a possible fire situation.

It is unlikely that you've got a faulty dimmer, since you state that not all of the lights go off at once, thus it can be narrowed down to each can and thus the thermal overload being the culprit.

I would suggest you look inside the recessed can light fixture and determine what the maximum wattage bulb you can use, (60, 75, 90 watts, etc.) and use the next lower wattage bulb instead. I also install only Halogen bulbs in recessed cans, (they have a flat lens vs. a rounded bulb lens area like PAR type bulbs). Halogen bulbs are also the most efficient incandesent bulb that provides the whitest light possible and directs more light (and thus heat) downward away from the recessed can.

I avoid using a standard light bulb or PAR type bulbs in any recessed can fixtures as they tend to heat up quite a bit and cause the thermal protection to trip frequently.

As a Master Electrician that has installed literally thousands of recessed fixtures and dimmers, I can say that my customers prefer the Halogen light over standard bulbs and they last longer too.

I hope you find this Very Helpful and best regards!

Changing headlights

Suggest changing the clip fastener, or failing that, find some adaptation.
