There may be a CD jammed in the player, causing it to shut off. Another possibility is that the player mechanism has failed and is clicking.

Being 18 years plus old, spares were discontinued some 10 years ago. Genuine belts are no longer available only generic 'kits' of which will be the wrong dimensions or/and wrong tension. This will stop the idlers from moving freely.That is probably your issue.
