Why does my Nikon D60 while on auto focus or quick shutter speed either not focus and take the pic or focus and not take pics?

I have a 5D Mark II that has acted up like this. 99% of the time it will reset itself it you power off, remove the lense and allow them to sync up. Try this, it may work for you too!

Smoke damage

If your camera has been damaged in a fire then I'm not surprised it doesn't work properly. Take it to an authorized Nikon repair shop. Since it's a D60 I assume it's out of warranty but your insurance may cover some or all of it.

Unfortunately this isn't anything that can be necessarily fixed per se.

I'd suggest looking at Nikon's website and finding any applicable firmware upgrades. However, upon checking Nikon's website there are no available firmware upgrades currently.

Beyond that, I also recommend formatting your memory card (after transferring your photos to your computer) and possibly looking into purchasing a faster memory card. Memory cards have different write/read speeds which can affect the rate at which your pictures come up onscreen in the camera.

D60 error press shutter release button

Here's what I found on the Nikon forum and it also works for D60 Digital Camera.
Get a very small cross head screwdriver (watchmaker size)
A can of WD40
Sticky tape
A good light

Remove the Battery and SD card
Open up the bottom of the D40x putting the small screws onto the sticky tape in order of removal.

You know the camera well, so you know where all the screws go.
Remove the metal plate (used for the tripod mount, you will need to remove the back of the D40x as well, it's only 2 screws)

Now look at John C Ayr's pic of the D40xwww.flickr.com/photos/johncayr/3969534234/

Spray a SMALL amount of WD40 onto the red and white gear wheels.
(Don't use so much that it drips down onto the optics, you don't want oil in there!!!)

Put the battery in and hold it down to make contact, put in the sd card and switch on the camera and try the shutter button. (switch it to manual focus or it might try hunting around for ages for focus)

It might start working, if not move the red wheel a few stops and try again.

Once it's lubed up and the wheels move it should be ok.
Keep taking pics until you feel it is ok.

Then reassemble following the screws backwards on the sticky tape.

Error! Press shutter release button again

OK, don't worry. The repair is easy to be done, although a little "creepy". I have a girlfriend who owns a Nikon D60 which presented the very same problem, and this afternoon I repaired the camera myself. It's working very well so far. Here's how I did it.

First of all, check whether the menus are working properly. If they are, it means that the problem is not electronic (otherwise, it should provoke a general camera lock down).

Get the following equipment:

1) A very small cross head screwdriver (watchmaker size)
2) A can of WD40 (lub oil) - that one that has a little plastic tube for delicate jobs.
3) Double faced sticky tape
4) Printing paper (A4 size), and pen/pencil.
5) A good light

Remove the camera's Battery and SD card.

On the A4 paper, draw the bottom scheme of the camera with the position of the screws; on each position, place a little piece of double-faced sticky tape (so you'll be able to know exactly where each screw must be put into). You''l need two drawings, one for the camera's outter plastic cover and the other for the inner steel plate.

Open up the bottom of the D40x putting the small screws onto the sticky tape in the corresponding positions.

Then, remove the metal plate used for the tripod mount. You will need to remove the back of the camera as well.

All the screws must go for the correct corresponding places on the A4 paper scheme, otherwise you will find hard to put all the parts together again.

After you have the bottom of the camera open, you'll see small gears, one red and one white. They are there to transfer the up-and-down movement from the small motor to the camera's mirror, and they should be stuck due to lack of lubrication. If you move the red gear, you'll see the mirror moving together. Spray a SMALL amount of WD40 onto the red and white gear wheels. Don't use so much that it drips down onto the optics or the delicate electronic circuits - you don't want any oil in there!!!

After the oiling is done, put the battery in and hold it down to make contact. Switch the camera to MANUAL mode. Put in the SD card and switch on the camera. Thereafter, try its shutter button.

It might start working normally, without any error messages. If it's not moving, probably the oil has not spread properly yet throughout the red and the white gears. Move the red wheel a few stops and try again.

Once it's lubed up and the wheels move freely, camera should be ok. Before settling all the covers back to their places, keep taking pics until you feel that the camera is functioning normally. Probably you'll note that the error message will be gone.

Then reassemble the camera's parts following the screws backwards on the sticky tape.

Enjoy your camera again!

How do you take a pic with the Nikon d60 where the

You're trying for what's called a narrow depth of field. DoF is controlled by three factors: distance from camera to subject, lens focal length, and lens aperture. The closer the camera is to the subject, the narrower the DoF. The longer the lens focal length, the narrower the DoF. The larger the lens aperture, the narrower the DoF.

Get as close to the subject as practical, and use as long a focal length as practical. I realize these two aims conflict with each other. For portraits, you want a focal length in the 50-90mm range and move in to fill the frame.

You want to shoot with as wide an aperture as you can. Unfortunately most lenses are not at their sharpest wide open. Also, the 18-55mm lens doesn't open up all that wide, f/3.5 at 18mm and f/5.6 at 55mm. To get the widest aperture, you can shoot in the P or A modes. If you don't want to leave the point&shoot modes, try using the Portrait mode.

Since you're not paying for film, I suggest you experiment with the different settings and shooting setups, moving closer and farther from the subject, using different focal lengths, and using different apertures, and see what results you get.

Can't viewb the LCD screen when shooting a

The D60 works as SLRs have worked for half a century, showing the image in the viewfinder until you press the shutter. The LiveView feature which shows the image on the LCD screen is a rather recent development on DSLRs, unlike on point&shoot cameras. The D60 does not have this capability, which Nikon introduced with the D3 and D300.

Sorry if this wasn't the answer you wanted to see, but there it is.

Nikkon coolpix L1 After downloading memory card

A couple things you might try.. remove the card carefully and check the position of the "lock" tab. Make sure it is fully in the unlocked position - not locked or a point between the two positions. Reinsert and try again.

It sounds lie you're using a card reader to download the pictures - try formatting the card while in the card reader via computer. The card should be completely empty when the format is complete. You can even try copying files to and from the card to make sure its ok and format again. When complete, try again in camera.

If the problem persists, check to make sure the card is on Nikon approved memory card list for use with the Coolpix L1 (provided below):

The following is a list of approved memory cards for the Coolpix L1 digital still camera. These cards have been tested and approved for use with the Coolpix L1.
The L1 uses SD (Secure Digital) memory. Sandisk:
  • 64MB, 128 MB, 256MB, 512MB, 1 GB, 256MB*, 512MB*, 1GB*
Toshiba:
  • 64MB, 128MB, 256MB, 512MB, 1 GB, 128 MB*, 256MB*, 512MB
Panasonic:
  • 64MB, 128MB, 256MB, 1 GB, 256MB*, 512MB*, 1GB*
* - Cards rated for 10MB/s (high speed) Other cards have not been tested. For more details on the memory cards listed above, please contact the manufacturer.

The list came direct from Nikon Support. Other cards may work, but only those on the list are approved. Successful use of other cards can not be guaranteed.

I hope this helps!
