LOL, didn't you know windows 7 was just a tad bit better than vista?
Why do you think microsoft will be coming out with windows 8 in the
coming months by the fall of this year. They keep trying to get it
right. Go to Dell's site and see if there are Window's 7
drivers for your model. If not, try downloading and installing the
Windows Vista drivers. Right now, you might not have a driver or a good
driver.
Get online
and got to www.google.com In the google search box type: "Dell
Support" (without the quotes and put your manufacturer name before Support).
Look for downloads and drivers. Enter your model number and operating
system when requested. Download and install the Touchpad drivers and the Chipset (which has the usb ports).
The laptop freezes every 3 seconds
Well, caramelapopc, if you haven't upgraded the amount of RAM/memory in the laptop at any point, it is completely understandable that you might experience slowdowns. When Windows Vista was released, some manufacturers marketed laptops with only 1 GB of memory. This is the bare minimum for Vista to run, and as Vista got more bloated with updates and service packs, that 1GB gets pushed to it's limit. Acer was actually sued for selling laptops with only 1GB of RAM and Windows Vista because the laptops didn't meet the minimum system requirements for Vista after the video adapter had allotted say ~100MB for itself. My recommendation would be to go to www.crucial.com, look up your laptop by manufacturer and model number, and purchase more memory from them. You'll see a significant increase in smoothness, basically, it'll be back to like new again.
Vertial yellow line appeared on
Try connecting an external monitor to the 15 pin VGA plug located on the right side. You may have to initiate the external monitor by holding down the Function left of the Space bar and depressing the associated key, (it should have a little picture of a monitor).
If the display is fine on the external monitor then you have a bad LCD display. If you still get the yellow line on the external monitor your motherboard (system board) needs to be replaced.
Dell inspiron 1420 has a
If your display appears normal in safe mode then you have a video setting or driver problem. Try reinstalling the video software drivers.

Sound has this funny way of behaving sometimes.
This happened with me with the sound in Skype disappeared suddenly one day.
I used all I could think of possile and not possible.
In the end I downloaded Skype again-that did it.
You might try a new sound in your laptop.
Then look through the manual look in troubleshooing.
all the best
Dell inspiron 1420 not recognizing ac adapter
One possibility is that the power cord attaching the power adapter to the DC jack in the laptop might be broken or damaged. Inspect it visually to verify this possibility.
Also, try measuring the DC output from the power adapter's outlet to make sure it is providing the correct output voltage needed to run the laptop (if at all).
Another possibility is that the DC jack where the power adapter connects to the laptop might be either loose or damaged, & needs to be either re-soldered or replaced. However, in order to do this, you will need to disassemble the laptop & get the motherboard out.
If this did not work, there might be a possibility that the
charging circuitry on the laptop's motherboard is defective & needs
servicing. In order to do this, the laptop needs to be disassembled
& the motherboard checked for defective/burned out components in the
area near the DC jack. Any defective/burned out components found should
be replaced, or you might need to replace the laptop's motherboard
altogether.

Please try attaching an external Monitor to your notebook and if the white line still appears then there is something wrong with your display adapter integrated on your notebook's motherboard if not then its your LCD display. Check your Service Tag in the support and see if your warranty still active so you can have either of the 2 replace.

hard to answer your question without knowing what Operating System you have on your PC and laptops connections, eg. LAN, wireless etc.
If you have windows XP you will need to check Network Connections on your laptop to make sure the Internet connection is showing as connected.
Click on Start - Control Panel -- network connections.
Check if Internet gateway is setup
If not go to Internet Options in Control Panel and setup the Internet connection using the right buttons.
I cannot guide you if you have Vista or Win 7.
Inspiron 1420 dell says plugged in not charging
Check power adapter’s DC plug that connects into the laptop power socket with a multi-meter, the voltage should be slightly higher than the voltage that is printed on the label on the bottom of the adapter. If the voltage is zero or way below the voltage that is printed on the label then the power adapter is faulty and needs to be replaced.
If the adapter is OK then connect it to the laptop and power it up, then look at the power/battery charging LED light and wriggle the power plug in the laptop's power socket. If the power/battery LED light flashes and in a certain position this LED light stays firm, then the power socket is either faulty or it has a dry solder joint where it is connected to the motherboard.
This can be repaired but it requires the laptop to be completely dismantled to get at this power socket and repair. If you cannot DIY then I suggest you get a quote first.
